Igrot Kodesh · Letter 999 — Shidduchim
Volume 4 · Letter 235
By the grace of Hashem,
10 Iyar 5711,
Brooklyn, New York,
Greetings and blessings[1],
You will no doubt forgive me for writing to you about what concerns you personally.
On several occasions, I have heard my father-in-law, the Rebbe, say that one must love another Jew, even if he finds himself in a very distant place, even if one has never seen him. In this connection, our holy Torah also commands us: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
If there exists a possibility of coming to the aid of someone who finds himself in a distant place and whom one does not know, every man and every woman has a sacred obligation to do so, must seek the good of one's fellow, for "all Jews are brothers."
I have learned that you have, several times, been proposed shidduchim*. Now, for various reasons, you have refused them.
Obviously, one cannot, from a distance, formulate an opinion on a precise proposal. I shall permit myself, nevertheless, to formulate a remark, of a general order, on this subject.
Marriage is the most essential event in the life of a man or a woman. It marks with its imprint all the rest of life. It must therefore be the fruit of mature reflection and cannot be decided in haste.
For all that, a person, when he considers all the events of his life, of greater or lesser importance, cannot grasp all the parameters, for he is, all in all, very limited. His intellect and his thought cannot master the ins and outs of every thing. To a certain extent, it is therefore systematically necessary to put forward one's bitachon* in Hashem, Who always grants a positive outcome.
It is the same for a marriage. It is impossible to find a match that is irreproachable, possessing all the qualities at once. It is improbable that one can take into account all the elements in an exhaustive manner. From then on, if one agrees on the essential points, it is very often necessary to make concessions on what is accessory and seems not to fit. Moreover, it is very possible that there is only an appearance there, that in reality the conformity is perfect.
According to some, all this concerns only the young man and the young woman who meet. But this conception is false, for all Jews are brothers. The good or the opposite of good, chas v'shalom*, that one of them experiences reflects back on his family, on his friends, and even on those who are physically distant from him.
This has always been true, but is even more so at the present time, after the terrible persecutions that have torn from us tens of thousands of our brothers, the children of Yisroel[2]. Each home built now is therefore particularly important, especially when there is good hope that it will be based on the Torah and the mitzvos*.
I hope that you will be able to give me good news in this area, and I conclude by extending to you my blessing that you may settle yourself[3] soon, in a positive manner, materially and spiritually at once.
I would like to know whether you take part in public life in your surroundings and, if so, in what manner you do so.
