Igrot Kodesh · Letter 980 — Communal Affairs

Volume 4 · Letter 216

By the grace of Hashem,
13 Nissan 5711,
Hilula* of the Tzemach Tzedek*,
Brooklyn, New York,

To the Rav, distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim* and dedicates himself to communal needs, Rav Y.[1], the shochet*,

Greetings and blessings,

I observe your activity in the various domains entrusted to you by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and I note with satisfaction that you pursue all your accomplishments. You will no doubt multiply them and, without doubt, Hashem will grant you all the necessary strengths, for "the Holy One, blessed be He, does not act with deceit toward His creatures."

You know that the health of the Jewish body depends on the Torah and the mitzvos*. To put them into practice can therefore in no way affect it, chas v'shalom*. On the contrary, the mitzvos* fortify the one who practices them and all the members of his family.

Our Sages teach[2], in tractate Bava Kamma 92b, that "the wine belongs to its owner. One thanks, nevertheless, the one who serves it." The Tzemach Tzedek*, whose hilula* we celebrate, specifies that this principle does not apply to those who have no free will and are only "like the axe in the hand of the woodcutter." It is therefore forbidden to thank the stars and constellations, which fit this definition. It is not thus for the Jewish person, who actually possesses free will. As regards him, one may indeed "thank the one who serves," even if such a person could in fact have put the mitzvah* into practice without his intervention. You will consult on this the long explanation appearing in Derech Mitzvosecha, on the mitzvah* of milah*, end of chapter 3.

How much more so does all this apply to the mitzvos* you practice, that of Maamad*[3], Maos Chittim*[4], the responsibility of the Lubavitch shul*[5], and the publications. In spiritual domains, each one can exert influence on his fellow. In this case, "the one who serves" is not only an intermediary. He carries out his own action, convinces the other to put the mitzvah* into practice. His reward is therefore considerable.

How much more so is it the case in matters of tzedakah*, which is also called "act of tzedakah*." In this domain, one who leads others to give is greater than one who gives himself. Moreover, he can even compel them to do so, and our Sages say that "one compels[6] giving tzedakah*." All this is explained in the chassidic maamar* entitled "V'David Avdi," found in the kuntres* edited on the occasion of Shavuos* 5708, on page 27[7].

Our Sages remark that one who gives tzedakah* receives the interest in this world, while the principal is preserved for the World to Come. It must therefore, all the more so, be thus for one who leads others to give, and must be a vessel ready to draw down the blessing of Hashem and the assurance of the Holy One, blessed be He, according to which: "Test Me, please, in this[8]," and "I shall pour out a blessing upon you until there is no more want," which makes it possible, in the most literal sense, to obtain children, health, and material prosperity.

Hashem will grant you, as well as your wife, good health, abundance in serenity, and much Jewish and chassidic nachas* from all your children.

With my blessing for a kosher and joyous festival, as well as good health, always and every day,
