Igrot Kodesh · Letter 976 — Tzedakah

Volume 4 · Letter 212 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,
11 Nissan 5711,
Brooklyn,

To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim*, scholar of immense erudition, Rav Aharon Chaim HaLevi[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received in its time your gift, the monthly HaKerem[2] which you publish, and I thank you very much for it.

May Hashem grant that you multiply your activities for the Torah — to magnify it, beautify it and spread it.

It would be fitting, in such a Torah periodical, to dedicate a specific section to the Giver of the Torah. Certainly, our Sages say that, "since the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash*, the Holy One, blessed be He, possesses only the four cubits of halacha*." Even more, they emphasize that "the Holy One, blessed be He, forgave" certain sins, "but not the act of turning away from Torah study," and that He says: "Would that they abandon Me and keep My Torah," for then "the luminary that it contains brings them back to the good."

Nevertheless, one cannot wait for the reader to find this luminary in order to be brought back to the good, nor that he should be aware of the four cubits of halacha*, which are the dwelling place of the Holy One, blessed be He. One must offer him from the outset the luminary of the Torah, that is to say its inner teaching, so that he can access it directly. One must come to his aid so that he becomes fully aware that the four cubits of halacha* are indeed the dwelling place of the Holy One, blessed be He.

Our Sages say, in Tractate Nedarim 81a: "They abandoned My Torah by not reciting a brachah* before studying it." Rabbeinu Nissim explains: "It is clear that they studied it constantly, but they did not say a brachah* beforehand. Indeed, it was not sufficiently important in their eyes to justify this brachah*. They did not study it 'for the sake of His Name,' did not follow it, did not practice it for its own sake. Such are the words of this Rav and chassid*."

You should also consult the explanation given by Rambam, in the introduction to his commentary on the Mishna, on this teaching of our Sages, "since the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash*, the Holy One, blessed be He, possesses only the four cubits of halacha*," from which one can learn the wisdom and the conduct that is fitting to adopt. He says: "The most refined science is that which consists in representing to oneself in the mind the unity of the Holy One, blessed be He."

I extend to you my blessing for a kosher and joyous Pesach*.

Enclosed you will find the kuntres* edited on the occasion of Pesach*, which has just appeared.
