Igrot Kodesh · Letter 973 — Teshuvah

Volume 4 · Letter 209 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,
11 Nissan 5711,
Brooklyn,

To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim*, Rav Aryeh Zev[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your telegram, by which you ask me about the second day of Yom Tov* observed in the Diaspora[2]. I am a little surprised by it, for this question should be addressed to a Rav. Nevertheless, since you have addressed it to me, I will respond to it here.

I have seen certain persons conduct themselves as if they were residents of Eretz Yisrael*[3], so long as their family had remained in Eretz HaKodesh* and they themselves intended to return to that country. Nevertheless, one will strive that this conduct should not be public[4]. This contradicts the opinion of the Shaar HaKollel at its beginning.

You must know that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, did not give me a clear-cut ruling on this question, but I have seen several persons from Eretz HaKodesh*, who came to spend the festivals in the presence of the Rebbe, who had adopted this practice, and the Rebbe was aware of it.

Enclosed you will find the kuntres* edited on the occasion of Pesach* and the collective letter that accompanies it[5].

I conclude by extending to you my blessing for a kosher and joyous Pesach* and for success in your sacred mission.

With greetings to all yours,

Notes
[1] Rav A. Z. Lipsker, of Eretz HaKodesh. See letter no. 910 regarding him.
[2] Should one who resides in Eretz Yisrael and is visiting outside the country observe one day of Yom Tov or two?
[3] And observe a single day of Yom Tov.
[4] So that there be no public transgression of the second day.
