Igrot Kodesh · Letter 972 — Chinuch

Volume 4 · Letter 208

By the grace of Hashem,
11 Nissan 5711,
Brooklyn,

To the Rav, distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim*, Rav I.[1],

Greetings and blessings,

Enclosed you will find the kuntres* edited on the occasion of the festival of Pesach*, which you will make available to those around you, that all may study it, in order to draw a teaching from it, to apply it and to act in accordance with the conclusion it states, both for oneself and for one's fellow. The nefesh ha'Elokis* must exert its influence on the nefesh habahamis*, just as one would do toward one's fellow[2].

These words, pronounced at the sicha* of Chol HaMoed* Pesach*, which is reproduced in the present kuntres*, were addressed to the rectors and directors of yeshivos*. In addition, they specifically concerned America. They are, nevertheless, a very clear teaching, for whoever[3] is capable of exerting an influence, in the words of our master, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, in this sicha*:

"You must be aware of the responsibility that Divine Providence has entrusted to you.

When a young Torah scholar finds himself in a city, all must be able to become aware that an upright Jew is present in this place.

You must occupy yourselves with the youth."

This concerns the four categories of children[4] — the wise one and the wicked one, the simple one (or the foolish one[5]) and the one who does not know how to ask — without any exception, as it is said: "I will multiply[6] his offspring."

In accepting this responsibility and assuming it in the manner that suits each one, one can draw down and bring into reality the blessing that is expressed at the end of this sicha*, that Hashem grants success to carry through the mission and to accomplish all this.

With my blessing for a kosher and joyous Pesach* and with greetings to your entire kehilla*,

M. Schneerson,

* * *

I received[7], with pleasure, the report[8] of our delegate, Rav B. G.[9], describing what you have accomplished, in addition to what you have written to me directly. And "one must know elevation in the realm of holiness"[10].

In our current situation, it is impossible for us to act on behalf of all those who need a good chinuch*. Consequently, it is clear that priority must be given to those who are capable of receiving the purest — that is to say, for example, those who do not mix sacred and secular studies, or those who receive no chinuch* at all.

Particular care must be taken to train teachers and educators through suitable courses.

The korban Pesach* is distinguished from all the other sacrifices because it is essential that man consume it. It therefore underscores the importance of concrete action, of acting with one's material body, in one's physical life[11].

This is what the introduction of this kuntres* explains regarding the matzah*, according to the great series of chassidic discourses Vekachah.
