Igrot Kodesh · Letter 971 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 4 · Letter 207

By the grace of Hashem,
11 Nissan 5711,
Brooklyn, New York,

It is known that our ancestors[1], when they left Egypt, ceased to be considered as bnei Noach*[2] in order to receive the Torah and to perceive the Divine revelation[3]. It was so from the beginning of their departure or when they completely left that country[4].

It is therefore from this episode that our Sages derive the laws of conversion. It is clear that one can also conclude from it what their moral situation was. Evil still had a strong grip on the left side of their heart. On the other hand, their wish and desire was to liberate their nefesh ha'Elokis*, exiled in "the other side," that of the impurity of Egypt, in order to attach themselves to Hashem[5].

It is the same every day. A man is required to consider himself as if he had been liberated this very day from Egypt, as the chassidic maamar* in the present kuntres* explains. How much more must this be so during the festival of Pesach*.

It is known that every year, a festival, when it occurs, again awakens what must be its inner content[6].

Each person, especially if he is not yet a beinoni*[7] — the perfection toward which he must strive — is therefore required to liberate his nefesh ha'Elokis*, exiled in the body and the nefesh habahamis*. Even more, he must elevate this nefesh ha'Elokis* far above the body and the nefesh habahamis*, attach himself to Hashem through the Torah and mitzvos* that he studies and practices.

The days of Pesach*, and particularly the first night of this festival, have a positive particularity[8] that distinguishes them from all the rest of the year, including the other festivals. Indeed, the Jews then nourish themselves with matzah*, which reveals the attribute of intellectual revelation[9] in all its grandeur and allows one to perceive the Essence of Divinity, to attach to Him one's physical body, so that the vitality one draws from material foods is also Divine.

Its effect therefore exerts itself on the nefesh ha'Elokis* and also on the nefesh habahamis*, that is to say on the yetzer hara*, whose attacks become less strong. When the latter begins to refine itself, it will allow the nefesh ha'Elokis* to believe, with complete faith, in what it does not understand by its intellect.

In the expression of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, in his sicha* that is reproduced in this kuntres*, "every moment is precious"!

Menachem Schneerson,
