By the grace of Hashem,

Eve of the holy Shabbat* that blesses the month of Adar* 5729,
Brooklyn, New York,

I greet you and bless you.

We are[1] on the eve of the holy Shabbat* that blesses the month of Adar*, whose culminating point is the days of Purim*, which are approaching. The content of these days is well known — they are commemorated and relived[2] each year.

This is so in one's relationship with Hashem, with the conviction that what is accomplished according to natural ways — for example, Esther's intervention with Achashverosh* — succeeds only when the action is accompanied by prayer[3], a supplication to the Holy One, blessed be He, for salvation belongs to Hashem. That is why, even now, the fast of Esther* precedes the celebration of Purim*.

The same is true in human relationships, for one of the Mitzvot* of Purim* is the sending of food portions to friends. The reason is[4] the need to highlight the drawing together of hearts, mutual friendship. Another Mitzvah* is essential: gifts to the poor. One must indeed help those in need, which is even more important than sending food to friends or one's own Purim* feast. In the precious words of the Rambam*, who rules the Halacha*: "It is preferable that a person multiply his gifts to the poor rather than his feast and food portions to friends, for one who gladdens the hearts of these unfortunate ones resembles the Divine Presence," according to the end of the laws of the Megillah*[5].

* * *

I was pleased to learn what you do in the army and your good conduct. First of all, you wear Tefillin* every weekday and "one Mitzvah* leads to another"[6]. You thus put into practice the other Mitzvot* of the Torah*, the Torah of life — an expression meaning, in its simplest sense, that it teaches a lesson for life in this world, so that life be worthy of its name — all the more so since observing a Commandment of the Creator, blessed be He, protects from all that is undesirable[7]. Naturally, if observance of the Torah* and Mitzvot* is indispensable at every moment and in every place, how much more so in our Holy Land*, especially in a situation where the blessings of Hashem, Who gives the Torah* and commands the Mitzvot*, are particularly necessary.

I hope that you use your influence in the direction just defined, also for the benefit of others. For "you shall love your neighbor as yourself"[8] is "a great principle of the Torah*"[9]. May Hashem cause your words to come from the heart. In that way, it is certain they will enter the heart[10] and have their effect — all the more so when accompanied by a personal example.

There is also another point. When words come from the heart, they have their effect at every moment and in every situation, for the heart of Israel* is alert to the Torah* and Mitzvot*[11]. All the more so is this the case in the army, whose fundamental rule is obedience and submission[12], so that "we will do" precedes "we will understand"[13]. Now, if this is so for human instructions, how much more is it the case for Hashem's...

I add that in the army, no one can claim that his conduct concerns only himself and that others have nothing to say to him on the subject. One observes, in fact, that on the conduct of each individual — including a simple soldier — depends at times the success of the mission and the victory of an entire battalion, sometimes even that of the entire front and the fate of the entire country. The opposite is true for undesirable conduct, heaven forbid[14]. Now, the same holds, or even more strongly, for the daily personal conduct of each of the children of Israel*, the armies of Hashem.

Another point: when one finds oneself in this context, one often observes the Providence of Hashem with one's very eyes. Naturally, the same Providence is effective at every instant and in every place, but, in general, it is concealed by the ways of nature, and reflection is therefore necessary[15]. It is not so, however, in the framework of the army and the situation that prevails there. One then observes the Providence of Hashem in the clearest manner. It is surely unnecessary to say more. With my blessing for joyous Purim* days and, according to the words of the verse[16]: "for the Jews there was light, joy, gladness, and honor,"
