To the attention of the leaders of "Young Israel*", may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you and bless you.

I received, in due course, your letter in which you raise the question of forming a united religious front[1] — a technical[2] one — in our Holy Land*, may it be restored and rebuilt. Please forgive the delay in my reply, the reason for which is as follows: I wanted to obtain, from various sources, information on the chances that such an initiative would succeed. "I have therefore delayed until now[3]."

Based on the latest information that has reached me and been confirmed indirectly, the current situation of the Holy Land*, may it be restored and rebuilt, is comparable to what it was before the last elections — and may Hashem ensure that the results are not the same — since at that time, this front was not formed. Besides, it is not surprising that the situation has not evolved, for those who then took a position against the front are still in power, and the reasons that led them to prevent its formation remain valid at present. It is very regrettable that one does not wish to draw the lesson from the failure of the last elections, nor from the developments that have occurred since.

As I wrote at the time of the previous elections[4], if there is not a particularly strong and unambiguous pressure from public opinion, thereby proving its seriousness, the chances in this domain will, to our great misfortune, be comparable to what they were at the time.

Naturally, I am not discouraged, heaven forbid, for this would be contrary to the Jewish outlook, according to which everything positive faces difficulties, especially an achievement as important as the formation of a technical religious front[5] — and I emphasize the word "technical," meaning it is solely oriented toward the elections. For my opinion is very clear: just as the front is necessary for elections, the parties must not remain united afterwards, for many reasons.

On my part, without making a vow, I will endeavor to do everything possible to form this technical religious front and, undoubtedly, "Young Israel*" will use its influence to see the idea through, as your letter states. However, the moment for applying pressure must be just before the elections. With my respects and blessing,

שלום וברכה!

בעתו קבלתי מכתבם בו כותבים על דבר השאלה דהקמת חזית דתית טכנית באה"ק ת"ו. ואתם רב הסליחה על העיכוב במענה שלי. והסיבה לזה היא שרציתי לקבל ידיעות עד כמה שאפשר על דבר הסכויים בזה, וממקורות שונים, ואחר עד עתה.

ועל פי הידיעות האחרונות שהגיעו אלי ואשר קבלתי עליהן אישור גם מן הצדדין, המצב בזה באה"ק ת"ו הוא על דרך שהי' קודם הבחירות האחרונות שם, והלואי שהתוצאות תהיינה אחרות משהיו אז כשלא נתקיימה החזית. ובאמת אין פלא שלא חל שינוי בהמצב, כי אותם האנשים שהחליטו אז נגד החזית הם גם הקובעים עתה את מהלך הענינים בזה, וכן הסיבות שהניעו אותם למנוע חזית אז קיימות גם עתה. וחבל חבל שלא רוצים ללמוד לקח מהכשלון בבחירות האחרונות, וגם שלא רוצים ללמוד מן השנויים שחלו מאז ועד הנה.

וכמו שכתבתי בשעת הבחירות ההן – אם לא יהי' לחץ ציבורי הכי גדול וחד-משמעי שיראו שמתכַונים ברציניות, הרי לדאבוננו הכי גדול הסכויים בזה כמו שהיו אז.

מובן שאיני מתיאש ח"ו, שהרי זהו היפך גישת היהדות לכל דבר טוב שנתקל בקושיים, ובפרט בדבר כה רציני כהקמת חזית דתית טכנית [ואני מדגיש "טכנית", היינו אך ורק לשם הבחירות, כי דעתי ברורה שכמו שהוא מוכרח בעד הבחירות כן מוכרח הוא שלא יהי' איחוד המפלגות לאחר הבחירות, ומכמה וכמה טעמים]. ובלי נדר – מצדי אשתדל לעשות כל האפשר למען הקמת חזית דתית טכנית האמורה, ובודאי גם "ישראל הצעיר" ינצלו כל השפעתם להגשמת הרעיון כאמור במכתבם. אבל הזמן ללחוץ – הוא סמוך להבחירות.
