Igrot Kodesh · Letter 9633
Volume 26 · Letter 59 · 18 Tévet 5729 · To: domaine du bien
By the grace of Hashem,
18 Tevet* 5729,
Brooklyn, New York,
I bless you and greet you,
I am replying to your letter of 5/1[1]. You describe the event that occurred as a "misfortune" and it is therefore unnecessary to comment on it, to emphasize that it affects not only the three people concerned, as you write, but also the children of the couple. Indeed, sons and daughters, by nature, sense the strained relations between their parents. Moreover, the traces of such an event persist thereafter, for weeks, months or even a longer period — one does not know. On the other hand, the "contribution" of the event lasts only an instant and only for the two people concerned.
On the other hand, every Jewish man and woman receives the commandment to reject any feeling of resignation[2], for "nothing withstands Teshuvah*"[3], whose object[4] is absolute repentance, from the depths of the soul, for what has occurred and therefore a firm resolution for the future. This also includes being prudent, removing everything that might again expose these people to the same trial, which Hashem forbid. In this matter, every precaution is praiseworthy.
"Hashem searches the hearts"[5] and He knows that the Teshuvah in these areas is sincere and moral. He therefore grants abundant forgiveness[6], a complete pardon that can come only from Him, including in particular a reduction of the pain and shame caused to all those who were involved in the event and what occurred. According to the terms of the verse[7]: "Would Hashem's hand be shortened?" Now, reducing this pain is precisely the desire of your heart.
As the books of the Rambam*[8] explain — he who was both physician of the body and physician of the spirit — it is clear that every event making Teshuvah necessary must be used to practice an addition[9] in the domain of good, by adopting an additional, good and upright practice, toward Hashem or toward one's fellow man, as the Creator of man indicates, He who guides him in His Torah*, called Torah of life, which is a teaching for life. I mean, very simply, that one must have daily conduct based on the Torah, with even more precision than was necessary beforehand and, as I have said, "nothing withstands the will"[10]. With my blessing of success in all this, as well as to give me good news,
On behalf of the Rebbe Shlita*,
the Secretary,
