To Rav Akiva Moshe Gotlieb, organizing committee of the rabbinical conference, in the holy city of Jerusalem, may it be restored and rebuilt,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received[1] your letter of 11 Tevet regarding the rabbinical conference. I am somewhat surprised that it was sent relatively shortly before the conference[2], leaving no time to respond. Furthermore, there are no details concerning the scope of this conference and those who have been invited.

Nevertheless, according to rumor and information obtained, Rabbinical figures from different countries and various organizations are the invitees. Now, one is familiar with the opposition of the great Torah authorities of the previous generation to such a rabbinical conference[3]. Moreover, the reasoning of these great authorities is well known and, in our time, not only is it still valid, but on the contrary, the risks are even greater, even more plausible. Therefore, in my opinion, in accordance with the clearly expressed and definitive opinion of these great Torah authorities of Israel, this conference should not take place.

It is also clear that referring, for example, to an emergency conference changes nothing, because only what results concretely matters, especially since these great Torah authorities warned the sages, who are "the eyes of the community"[4], asking them to take into account what will happen after such a conference, the new faces that will then appear[5]. You should understand what I mean.

I have good hope that you will be vigilant, that this conference will not take place, and that you will give me good news on this subject. With my respects and blessing,

שלום וברכה!

הנני בזה לאשר קבלת המכתב מי"א בטבת, בקשר לכנס רבני. ולפלא קצת שנשלח המכתב זמן כה קצר, לפי ערך, לפני מועד הכנס, וגם שאין בו כל פרטים ע"ד הקף הכנס ומי המוזמנים וכו'.

אבל כיון שלפי השמועה והידיעות – מוזמנים רבנים ממדינות שונות ומאירגונים שונים וכו', הרי ידועה התנגדות גדולי ישראל בדור שלפנינו לכנס רבנים מסוג זה, וידועים ומפורסמים גם הטעמים שלהם, אשר בדורנו זה לא רק בתקפם עומדים אלא אדרבא החששות הן גדולות יותר וקרובות לפועל יותר. ולכן דעתי, מיוסדה על דעתם ברורה ותקיפה של גדולי ישראל הנ"ל, אשר אין לעשות כנס זה כלל.

מובן גם כן אשר גם מה שיקראו לזה כנס חרום וכיו"ב, אין זה משנה כלום, כי העיקר הוא איך שזה יוצא לפועל, ובפרט שהזהירו גדולי ישראל הנ"ל שעל החכמים עיני העדה להביא בחשבון את העתיד לבוא לאחרי כנס כזה, הפנים חדשות שיהיו אז וכו'. וד"ל.

התקוה חזקה אשר יעמדו בפרץ ולא יבוא לפועל כנס רבנים האמור ויבשרו טוב.
