To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and dedicates himself to communal needs, with many accomplishments, Rav Moshe, known as Dr. Munk[1],

I greet you and bless you,

After a long interruption, I received, with pleasure, your letter of Rosh Chodesh* Kislev*, which reached me with considerable delay. Receiving it was a pleasant surprise and I was also satisfied with its content, attesting that your interest in the Chabad* schools in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, remains as keen as ever. Moreover, I hope that it is not merely maintained but is, in addition, increasing, in accordance with the precept of our Sages that one is ever elevated in the domain of holiness[2]. Indeed, here is one of the teachings of the days of Chanukah*, which have just passed, according to which one must add candles day by day[3], "the candle that is a Mitzvah and the Torah that is a light"[4].

I am writing, to convey the content of your letter, to the administration of the schools[5] to which you refer and, in particular, to Rav T. G.[6]. Nevertheless, I have been informed that he does not wish to accept these functions[7]. If he does so under constraint, or even out of submission to an instruction from another continent[8], one may truly wonder whether this will not have an influence on the deep manner in which he assumes them, although without doubt he will strive to devote himself to them faithfully. However, the mind does not always direct the heart, and this is particularly important in the domain of education. Indeed, students are very often sensitive to such changes[9]. To someone like you, no further explanation is doubtless necessary.

As I have said, I have good hope that your interest is directed not only toward the Chabad schools you mention, but also toward the other Chabad schools. Naturally, you will also do this with benevolence and in an ever-increasing manner. Indeed, we have been given the assurance[10] that "one comes to the aid of one who wishes to purify himself" and Hashem's help knows no limits. With my respects and blessing,

לאחרי הפסק הרב נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מר"ח כסלו, שהגיעני באיחור זמן רב.

ונוסף על ההפתעה הנעימה בקבלת מכתבו בכלל, קורת רוח גם בתכנו, המראה אשר התענינותו בבתי ספר החב"דיים באה"ק ת"ו בתקפה עומדת.

בפרט שתקותי שלא רק נשארה בתקפה אלא ניתוסף בתוקף ההתענינות, כציווי חכמינו ז"ל להעלות בקודש.

והרי זה גם כן מהוראות ימי חנוכה דאזלינן מנייהו – להוסיף בנרות (נר מצוה ותורה אור) מיום ליום.

כותב הנני בתוכן מכתבו להנהלת המוסדות אודותם כותב, אף כי במיוחד להרב צ.ג. שי', הנה כיון שכתבו לי שאין ברצונו לקבל התפקיד, הרי אם יקבלנו מתוך גזירה, או עכ"פ משמעת ציווי הבא מעבר לים, הרי צ"ע אם לא ישפיע זה על פנימיות מילוי תפקידו, אף שבודאי ישתדל לקיימו באמונה, אבל הרי לא תמיד המח שליט על הלב, ונוגע זה במיוחד בעניני חינוך, כי לפעמים הכי תכופות המחונך רגיש לשינויים כגון אלו וכו' ובודאי לדכוותי' אין צורך בביאור נוסף.

כאמור לעיל, תקותי חזקה שאין התענינותו של מר מכוונת רק למוסדות חב"ד אודותם כותב, כי אם גם לשאר מוסדות חב"ד, ופשוט אשר גם בזה בעין יפה ובאופן דמוסיף והולך. והרי הובטחנו הבא לטהר מסייעין אותו, סיוע מלמעלה שאין בזה כל הגבלות.
