By the grace of Hashem,

To Mr. Yosef Benton,

I greet and bless you,

I received, with delay, your letter and what was enclosed with it. I took note therein, with satisfaction, of the impressions you draw from your visit to our Holy Land. Indeed, the nations of the world too call it the Holy Land and, as our holy Torah* says, it is: "the land upon which the eyes of Hashem your Hashem are turned, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year"[1].

May Hashem therefore cause a spirit of holiness and purity to be added to all those who visit our Holy Land, so that they preserve its trace all the days of their lives. As our Sages indicate, this will have a concrete effect on daily existence, for "action is essential"[2].

I take the liberty of expressing the hope that your putting on of Tefillin* in the Holy Land was a good beginning and that you will continue to wear them in the coming days, every weekday morning, at least for a few moments. Indeed, every Mitzvah* must be put into practice because it is a Mitzvah* — a commandment of the Creator. Yet, different Mitzvot* possess particular virtues. One of them, specific to the Mitzvah* of Tefillin* — worn facing the heart and on the head[3] — is to establish peace and harmony between intellect and feeling, rational understanding and emotion, the desire of the heart[4], which is particularly necessary, especially in our era.

I hope you will not hold it against me for my intervention in your life and conduct. But such an approach is based on the formulation of your letter and on the assertion of our Sages that all Jews are friends[5].

I thank you for having sent me this book of Tehillim*, at your mother's request. The Jewish custom is to find, in everything, an allusion, a connection. This therefore gives me the occasion to ask you to accept my gift as well — "measure for measure"[6]. It is a pair of Tefillin* and a small Siddur*, which was also published in the Holy Land, at the Kfar Chabad* printing house.

I address to you my blessing to bring me good tidings of all this, with joy and enthusiasm. With all my wishes for days of Chanukah* filled with light, in an ever-increasing manner,

שלום וברכה!

באיחור נתקבל מכתבו עם המצורף אליו, ונהניתי לקרוא על דבר רושמיו מביקורו בארצנו הקדושה, אשר אפילו כל עמי הארץ קוראים אותה ארץ הקודש, וככתוב בתורתנו הק' היא ארץ אשר עיני ה' אלקיך בה מראשית השנה ועד אחרית שנה.

ויהי רצון אשר יתוסף רוח קדושה וטהרה בכל אחד המבקר בארצנו הקדושה, באופן אשר הרושם יהי' ניכר לכל משך ימי חייו, וכהוראת חכמינו ז"ל עד לענינים של מעשה בפועל בחיי היום-יום, כי המעשה הוא העיקר.

ארשה לעצמי להביע תקותי אשר הנחתו תפילין באה"ק היתה התחלה טובה להמשך בזה גם לימים יבואו, בכל יום חול בוקר, על כל פנים לרגעים אחדים. ואף על פי שכל מצוה צריך לקיים אותה מפני שהיא מצוה, זאת אומרת ציווי הבורא, הרי לכמה מצוות יש סגולות מיוחדות. ואחת הסגולות והסגולה המיוחדת למצות תפילין, שהנחתה על היד כנגד הלב ועל הראש, היא להביא שלום והאַרמוניא בין השכל והרגש, ההבנה שבראש והרגש והתאוות שבלב, שכל כך דרוש זה ובפרט בתקופתנו זו.

תקותי חזקה אשר לא יקפיד מר על שמתערב אני בחייו והנהגתו שלו, ומיוסדה התערבות זו על סגנון מכתבו ועל הודעת חכמינו ז"ל אשר כל ישראל חברים.

תודה על שלחו לי על פי בקשת אמו תחי' ספר תהלים, וכמנהג היהודי למצוא בכל דבר רמז ואחיזה, הרי זה נותן לי מקום לבקשו לקבל גם כן ממני תשורה, מידה כנגד מידה, והיא – זוג תפילין ביחד עם סידור קטן אשר נדפס גם כן בארץ הקודש, בבית הדפוס של כפר חב"ד.

בברכה לבשורות טובות בכל האמור מתוך שמחה וטוב לבב, ואיחולים לימי החנוכה מלאי-אור הולך ומוסיף.
