Igrot Kodesh · Letter 9613

Volume 26 · Letter 39 · To: Rav Lewinger(4)

[17[1] Kislev* 5729]

P.S.: I[2] have duly received your letter[3], as I was saying, and I enclose a copy of my response to Rav Lewinger[4], who has also addressed himself to you on this subject. As I noted in my letter, I had great doubt as to whether I should write all this and, even after resolving the doubt, I will do so in the most concise manner.

In somewhat greater detail, I spoke about it to the Chassid*, Rav Y. Elinson, and one of my intentions in the matter — in accordance with the request I made of him — was that he transmit my words to you. For obvious reasons, I did not wish to put them in writing as long as there was a possibility of avoiding danger to persons, Heaven forfend, and of intervening through other channels.

I leave it to your judgment, as I indicated to Mr. Elinson, to determine whether it is appropriate to transmit the content of my letter to those who addressed themselves to you regarding Hebron*, for example, as well as the terms of my exchange with Mr. Elinson. In any case, I asked that all this be transmitted to Mr. H.M. Shapiro[5]. According to information I have received, he is one of the principal speakers and organizers advocating the restitution, at least partial, of the territories. This endangers security not only at the border but throughout the entire Holy Land* — may it be restored and rebuilt — in a natural sense. You will understand what I mean.

I absolutely do not understand the "ruse" of exerting pressure on the military and on those responsible for security so that they do not express, clearly and with full determination, their view on the question. For there is no interest, no gain in restoring these territories, since "their mouth speaks vain things"[6], as has been observed in the past with all the promises of peace. According to the words of Rashi*[7], based on the Sifri* Beaalotecha 9:10, which were studied last week: "This is an established principle[8]: Esau* harbors hatred toward Jacob*". And our Sages explain at length[9], in every possible way, that: "the kindness of the nations is a sin"[10].

It is therefore quite clear that nothing will be gained by returning the territories, as has been seen in the past, including the recent past, when the Suez Canal was restituted twelve years ago, and in other cases as well. You will understand what I mean. How much more so is this the case this past year, since every time an opinion is published advocating the restitution of territories and giving charity to the nations, the wave of terrorism increases and there are concrete casualties — martyrs in our Holy Land*, may it be restored and rebuilt — whose blood Hashem will avenge, as has been verified in practice.

As I wrote in the letter of which I send you a copy, all of this could be greatly elaborated, but this is a subject to which silence befits, and it is not good to write what is not to the praise of Israel[11]. How much more should one not speak of it.

It is wondrous to observe, truly at every step, how correct are the words of our Sages, according to which: "adding amounts to subtracting"[12]. This allows one to understand the connection that can be made between the two injunctions: "You shall not add and you shall not subtract," stated simultaneously in a single verse, Va'etchanan 4:2 or Re'eh 13:1[13]. For it is precisely those who assert, with vehemence, that a Mitzvah* has been added in our time — that of the ascent to our Holy Land*, may it be restored and rebuilt — and that it must be counted among the six hundred and thirteen Mitzvot*, contrary to the opinion of the Rambam*[14], who even assert, some of them, that upon this depends the observance of the entire Torah* and Mitzvot*, the continuity of the people of Israel and of the Land of Israel — may it be restored and rebuilt — who consequently permit travel on boats that violate Shabbat* publicly[15], for everything is permitted to fulfill this Mitzvah*, a fortiori lesser prohibitions.

Then they add one idea to another by publicly announcing that we now live at the beginning of the redemption[16], which contradicts a Halachah* clearly established by the Rambam*[17], who, without any doubt, was acquainted with the Yerushalmi*[18], the commentary of the Ramban* on Shir HaShirim*, the texts of tractate Sanhedrin*[19], and others. Yet among precisely these very people, many wish to cede the territories, at least partially.

I do not wish to elaborate on all this, for I fear to interfere with the path of your thinking. As our friend[20] — may Hashem grant him long days and good years — once indicated to me, when you meet people you will strive to find common ground, that which you share and that which unites you, without emphasizing, without highlighting what distinguishes, separates, or at least distances you from them. It is quite evident that this applies to our relationship, the bond between you and me. I hope it is: "as the face reflected in water"[21]. In this instance as well, I would not have written all this had I not seen a proclamation about the beginning of redemption, which constitutes a danger. This is, for now, the only explanation I have found for these martyrs and victims in our Holy Land* — may it be restored and rebuilt — among whom are also survivors of the Shoah* who witnessed clear miracles, yet nonetheless fell in our Holy Land* — may it be restored and rebuilt — again in a manner that is not natural, as has been said. May Hashem avenge their blood!

The explanation is precisely that which has been given each time a false messiah arose, who diverted a person and incited them to follow him. In the end, there were victims, Heaven forfend. The same applies to the idea that redemption has already begun. True, the situation is miraculous[8] and millions of Jews have experienced a great salvation[8]. Yet this is not the redemption of the fourth exile[22]. On the contrary, according to all indications, it is a particularly deep fall within the double and multiple darkness of this exile, in which twilight is presented as light[23]. And the bitter punishment is as follows: yet another victim in Israel, another martyr in our Holy Land* — may it be restored and rebuilt — and then another. May Hashem avenge their blood!

I received information "incidentally," in response to my objection about the danger that may result from relinquishing one of the territories, that according to ages and passages in the Talmud*, the situation is not considered dangerous. This is a strange argument and demonstration. In various texts it is stated, or one can deduce, that this is indeed the beginning of redemption, although these explanations do not in any way concern what is the object of our discussion. This is the case, for example, of the story in Midrash Eichah Rabbah*, chapter 1, paragraph 51, according to which at the time of... One should seek halachic* decisions not in the Midrashim* of our Sages, nor even in the difficult passages of the Talmud*, since the Halachah* has been established by the later Sages and the Decisors in the light of whom we will advance until the coming of our righteous Mashiach*.

I am very grieved that you have not written to me for a long time already, which runs counter to your custom and your nature, which is to write with eagerness about events and Chassidic* gatherings — for example the discovery of the gravestone of the great Rav and Chassid*, Rav B.M., of blessed memory[28], the Chassidic* gathering in the Tzemach Tzedek* synagogue[29] during Rosh Chodesh* Kislev*. My mind was somewhat set at rest by the letter I have just received, as well as by your news transmitted by those who, coming from there, arrived here after seeing and speaking to you personally.

Following up on the discussion we had at the time regarding the first Passover* and the second[30], I had occasion to consult the Yosef Ometz*, a collection of responsa by the Chida*, which also contains responsa by his son-in-law. It is presented there as self-evident, citing various proofs, that it sometimes occurred that the entire community was postponed to the second Passover*, and it is stipulated that this sacrifice is offered even in a state of impurity. Such is not, however, the opinion of the Rambam*. You will consult this text at chapter 6.
