Igrot Kodesh · Letter 9601

Volume 26 · Letter 27 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,

Rosh Chodesh Kislev* 5729,
Brooklyn, New York,

To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Hillel, known as Dr. Medalye[1],

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of 26 Mar Cheshvan*, as well as the preceding ones, and I thank you for the good news it contains. May Hashem grant that you also give me good news in the coming days. For we have been commanded to rise in holiness[2] with regard to Torah* and its Mitzvot*. This includes the giving of good news and bringing satisfaction to a Jew[3] — all the more so since "You shall love your neighbor as yourself"[4] is "a great principle of the Torah"[5].

I recall what you said in your letter about not participating in the meeting of Rabbis in Europe[6], and on this subject I received, these past days, a visit from the Chief Rabbi of Great Britain, Rav Dr. Jakobovits*. Of course, our conversation also touched on this point, and I explained to him my position, which is as follows. It is certainly important to gather the Rabbis of a region, a country, or several neighboring European countries, and one may hope that such a meeting would be fruitful if it is organized by competent people and in the appropriate manner. But if, in addition to this, representatives of other countries and other continents attend this meeting, one will find oneself in the situation that has always been feared, to the highest degree, by the great men of Israel. Some say that such a risk no longer exists after the meeting of synagogues that took place last year[7] in Jerusalem, may it be restored and rebuilt — with the curious and dangerous explanations it entailed regarding "modifications" and meetings. For the majority of Rabbis are present there, and you must understand what I mean[8]. It is true that it is explained that such-and-such a person participated as an observer while another was invited as a speaker, but this is merely a device, as was concretely verified[8] at that Jerusalem meeting.

To someone like you, there is surely no need to say more, especially since it is not good to elaborate on such matters and make them public. On the contrary, the less this is done the better — this is self-evident. I have just received your letter following the one to which I was alluding. Your request for a blessing will be read at the grave[9]. With my respect and blessing for success in all domains,
