Volume 26 · Letter 20 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu

By the grace of Hashem,

20 Mar Cheshvan* 5729,
Brooklyn, New York,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, devotes himself to communal needs, and has many accomplishments, Rav Mordechai HaCohen,

I greet you and bless you,

I received[1] your greetings with pleasure, conveyed through your son, Rav Menachem HaCohen, as well as your book: "The Western Wall"[2]. I thank you for thinking to send it to me. If you publish other works in the meantime, please send them here, for the benefit of all[3]. You should do so even if these publications are not concerned with current events — and all the more so when they are, as in the case of this book.

The children of Israel* have the custom not to limit themselves to praise and commendation, but to also offer observations — particularly regarding what is printed and thereby reaches the greatest number, not only in the present but also in the future. It is therefore my duty to formulate here one general observation, which is the following. There are in your work many explanations that are presented conjointly, without distinguishing or separating them, which presupposes that most readers are at the same level of competence, or at least have comparable knowledge — whereas in reality, they are very far from one another and are sometimes even opposed to one another. Moreover, you also presuppose that the reader's competence is the same in other domains as well, or at least that it is related. To someone like you, there is surely no need to explain the seriousness of all this[4].

What I mean is no doubt clear. Nevertheless, to be more precise, I will cite at least two examples. The chapter "In the Aggadah*," on p. 71, mixes, with the same formulation — saying "the Aggadah relates" — on the one hand an Aggadah of the Torah, regarding which our Sages, of blessed memory, say: "If you wish to know the One Who created the world with His Word, study the Aggadah"[5]; and on the other hand, under the same heading, texts from books that are not recommendable[6].

The same applies to the chapter "Lamentations and Songs," which presents first a lamentation by Rabbi Elazar HaKalir*, based on an Aggadah from Eicha Rabbah*[7], and then, in the same chapter, texts by authors about whom there is reason to lament. You must understand what I mean.

Without question, you will not hold this observation against me, for in my view it is for the benefit of the many. Indeed, in this matter, there is no reason to feel that there is no point complaining about the past[8], for it is the future that is at stake[9]. For I trust that you will use the abilities with which you have been endowed, for many more years, to spread traditional Judaism in every place within your sphere of influence — true Judaism, for truth excludes all compromise.

You are surely aware of the importance of Rabbi Elazar HaKalir and the value of his liturgical poems[10], as the Ari Zal*, who is ever living, emphasizes in the Peri Etz Chaim*, at the beginning of the first gate. With my respect and blessing,
