Volume 26 · Letter 11 · To: pauvres

By the grace of Hashem,

13 Mar Cheshvan* 5729,
Brooklyn, New York,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter dated the Monday of Parshat Noach*, as well as to what was enclosed, which I return herewith. In my view, you should make every possible effort to retain your teaching position. First and foremost, it offers favorable prospects. Furthermore, and this is essential, it provides you — and your wife — with the means, with great opportunities, to spread traditional Judaism in that place.

Even if one were to grant that you could do the same elsewhere, it is nonetheless difficult to evaluate from the outset what the needs and success will be in a new place. Another point, which is likewise essential: our Sages adopt the principle that "the poor of your own city take precedence"[1].

I am surprised that you say nothing of your wife and children. This surely means that all is well. Nevertheless, the way of life of a Jewish man or woman consists in advancement, from strength to strength[2], in all that pertains to Torah* and its Mitzvot*[3], in order to attain elevation in the domain of holiness[4].

You no doubt know that a specific edition of Iggeret HaTeshuvah* by the Admur HaZaken*[5] has been produced as part of the campaign to promote the study of this section of the holy Tanya*. An English translation of Iggeret HaTeshuvah has also been published as a standalone volume. I trust that you will include this study in your outreach activities. Of course, this study will lead to action[6], for action is essential[7]. With my blessing to give me good news,
