I greet and bless you,

I duly received your undated letter in which you describe your state of mind. I am surprised that a Jew could find himself in such a state of mind. Indeed, a person in general, and a Jew in particular, has no right to become discouraged[1], as our Torah* — Torah of life, from the same root as Hora'ah*, teaching[2] — explains and emphasizes: it is a teaching for daily life. Furthermore, a Jew possesses a soul that is "a part of the Hashem above truly"[3], and it is therefore quite clear that he must not become discouraged. He must strengthen the bond, keep open the channel that connects him to Hashem, blessed be He, the Source of life and blessing. This bond is a daily existence in accordance with the teachings of Hashem, as expressed in His Torah, beginning with the wearing of Tefillin* each weekday morning and the Kashrut* of food, in particular. If you get in touch with our office in Paris, they will provide you with all the necessary details, with kindness.

May Hashem therefore grant that you give me good tidings, the more so since we have just entered a new year, which will be good and sweet, both materially and spiritually. With my blessing,

הנני לאשר קבלת מכתבו (בלי תאריך), בו כותב על דבר מצב רוחו וכו'.

ולפלא גדול שיהודי יהי' במצב רוח כזה, שהרי על האדם בכלל ועל יהודי בפרט אסור להתייאש, וכמבואר ומודגש בתורתנו תורת חיים – תורה מלשון הוראה, הוראה בחיי היום יום. וגם מובן אשר מכיון שלכל יהודי נשמה שהיא חלק אלו-ה ממעל ממש, הרי אין מקום ליאוש, אלא שצריך להחזיק קישור וצנור פתוח עם השם יתברך, מקור החיים והברכה. וקישור זה הוא בהנהגה בחיי היום יום על פי הוראות ה' בתורתו, התחל מהנחת תפילין בכל יום חול, כשרות המזונות וכולי. ואם יתקשר עם לשכתנו אשר בפריז, יתנו לו בחפץ לב כל הידיעות הצריכות.

ויהי רצון שיבשר טוב, ובפרט שנכנסנו בשנה חדשה שנה טובה ומתוקה בגשמיות וברוחניות גם יחד.
