Igrot Kodesh · Letter 940 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 4 · Letter 176

By the grace of Hashem,
7 Adar Sheni 5711,
Brooklyn, New York,

Our Torah[1], with all the parts that constitute it, is a Torah of life, which is eternal. My father-in-law, the Rebbe, explained why it is called "Torah of life." It delivers, in fact, the teaching necessary for every man and every woman in their daily life, individually, and a fortiori in the communal framework.

Different concepts of the Torah which, at first sight, have no bearing on the concrete life of every day or on the situation in which we currently find ourselves, in fact receive an application there, provided that one considers them on a deeper dimension. This application can take a finer form[2] or not, and clear teachings, decisive directives flow from them for concrete action, prescriptions or prohibitions[3].

It is the same with the chassidic maamar* that is presented here[4].

It asks one to demonstrate firmness "and mesirus nefesh* to put concretely into practice the Torah and the mitzvos*"[5], in particular to educate the children, without taking into account the opponent, "full of hatred, who wages a declared battle," without being affected by the one who wishes to take revenge, "the hidden enemy, who plots and seeks his revenge, even at the cost of departing from the law."

It gives the assurance that these children, who will continue to dedicate themselves to study, or who will commit themselves to it now, despite the persecutions, the threats, the cunning and the stratagems, will know, through their knowledge and through their chinuch*, how to render harmless this enemy who wishes to take revenge. Even more, it is thanks to their self-sacrifice that we will obtain the geulah*.

Such situations can still be encountered, at the present hour, in all countries. There are enemies who wage open battle, men who wish to take revenge and plot. But their objective remains the same. They want to seize control of these children, and their aim is that of Achaz: "if there are no children, there will be no adults; if there are no students, there will be no Sages; if there is no Torah, Hashem will not reveal His Presence in the world."

Nevertheless, we still receive at the present hour the promise that we received at that time. Mesirus nefesh* and an uncompromising attitude in the practice of the Torah and the mitzvos*, particularly with regard to chinuch*, will nullify all the cunning schemes and all the decrees "that the Torah be forgotten by Israel, chas v'shalom*, that they be drawn away from G-dliness, chas v'shalom*." These children will be "examples and models for Israel" and "the support thanks to which Your entire people will be made up of tzaddikim*."

The power of this self-sacrifice is considerable, and it therefore leads to the true and complete geulah*, which will come very soon and in our days, through our righteous Moshiach*,

Menachem Schneerson,

Notes
[1] This letter was written by the Rebbe as an introduction to the kuntres* edited on the occasion of Purim. It appears in Sefer HaMaamarim 5711, on page 178.
[2] The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "An illustration of this is found in this chassidic maamar, in paragraph 11, which explains the statement of our Sages that 'a thief, before committing his theft, asks Hashem to help him,' which can find a finer form in each person."
[3] The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "This in no way contradicts the statement of the Kuntres Acharon of the Tanya, in the section 'l'havin perat halachos,' that certain principles were never put into effect and never will be. Indeed, the Written Torah and the halacha cannot be separated from their plain meaning. One can therefore imagine that one will never be confronted with a certain situation."
[4] This is the chassidic maamar entitled "Kiymu v'kiblu haYehudim," delivered by the Frierdiker Rebbe in 5687-1927.
[5] The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "See paragraph 3 of this maamar. What is mentioned in quotation marks in the continuation of this letter is also a quotation from the maamar."

ב"ה,
