To the Rav, distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim*, Rav Tzvi[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I am replying to your letters of 10 and 17 Adar Rishon.

You ask me whether you should speak at meetings of parties or associations that are not Orthodox. It is difficult to lay down rules in this matter.

On one hand, it is good to seize every opportunity to exert a positive influence on the various circles of our Jewish brethren, in order to bring them closer to Yiddishkeit*, to the Torah and to the mitzvos*.

On the other hand, one must strive that participation in such a meeting cannot be interpreted as agreement with their conceptions or, at the very least, with their activities.

In practice, one must avoid running such a risk and speak in every place where it is possible to plant a seed of Yiddishkeit* and yiras Shamayim*. In most cases, such a planting bears fruit, immediately or, at the very least, later on.

You surely meet with Mr. ... and his wife. In a diplomatic manner, you should strive that they put into practice what we discussed when they were here, concerning taharas hamishpacha*.

I hope that you will announce to me good news, confirming that the son of Mr. ... has indeed begun to put on tefillin*. Why, then, should he be playing games with Hashem[2]?

When I was yesterday, erev Rosh Chodesh*, at the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, I mentioned your name and that of the members of your family, as you requested, that all your needs should be fulfilled.

במענה על מכתביו מיו"ד וי"ז לחדש אד"ר העבר:

קשה לקבוע כללים בשאלתו אם לנאום באספות מפלגות או חברות בלתי חרדיות.

מצד אחד נכון להשתמש בכל הזדמנות שתהי' כדי להשפיע על חוגים שונים של אחב"י לקרבם ליהדות לתורה ומצוות.

ומצד השני - יש להזהר מזה, שע"י השתתפות באסיפה שלהם לא יפרשו את זה - אויסטייצען - כעין הכשר על השקפותיהם, ועכ"פ על עבודתם.

ובנוגע אל הפועל, יש לשלול - באווארענען - את החששא האחרונה, ולנאום בכל מקום מוכשר לזריעת גרעין של יהדות ויראת שמים, וע"פ רוב המכריע - יש צמיחה מזריעה כזו, אם על אתר או לאחר זמן עכ"פ.

בטח מתראה עם מר... וזוגתו יחיו, ובאופן דיפלומטי ישתדל שיקיימו בפועל את מה שנדברנו בהיותם כאן בנוגע לטהרת המשפחה.

אקוה שיבשרני טובות שגם בנו של מר... שי' התחיל להניח תפילין, און וואס דארף ער זיך שפילן מיטן אויבערשטען?
