Igrot Kodesh · Letter 937 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 4 · Letter 172

By the grace of Hashem,
First day of Rosh Chodesh* Adar Sheni 5711,
Brooklyn,

To the Rav, distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim*, Rav Yisrael Noach[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I am replying to your two letters, which were undated, with the two requests for blessing that were enclosed.

Without taking it on as a vow, I will read the request for blessing for your wife and for your little daughter at the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe. The tzaddik* who departs from this world is found there even more than during his lifetime. He continues his work, always remains a faithful shepherd. He will therefore invoke divine mercy for them, will obtain their healing and the improvement of their condition, so that they should be in good health.

I am not at all pleased that many chassidim*, in their words and in their letters, aggravate and exaggerate every pain and every illness, chas v'shalom*. This goes against the will of our leader[2], whom I have heard say many times, including in public, citing the masters of Chabad*[3], that "if one thinks that all is well, then all is indeed well." Now if this is so for thought, how much more is it the case for speech, and a fortiori for writing, which is a concrete action.

Without taking it on as a vow, I will write in these days to Rav H. Y.[4].

I received a letter from Rav A. S. Menkin[5], concerning his problem, and I responded to him.

May Hashem help us, beginning from this day of Rosh Chodesh*, to see that "everything was overturned, so that the Jews dominated their enemies"[6]. This refers to actual domination and power, through the body and in the world, and not only superficially, as it is said at the beginning of chapter 13 of the Tanya. And this concerns the Jews, who are characterized by their faith, according to Tractate Megillah 13a. In this case, their enemies were indeed transformed and the darkness became light, as the Likkutei Torah says at the end of the maamar* entitled "Heyei Hashem li b'ozrai."

With my blessing and with greetings to your entire kehilla*,

M. Schneerson,
