Volume 4 · Letter 165 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu et

By the grace of Hashem,

27 Adar Rishon 5711,

Brooklyn,

To the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and

faithfully discharges his task,

Rav Yaakov[1] HaKohen,

Greetings and blessing,

In reply to your letter of 23 Adar Rishon.

You write to me that the material situation of the shul* is critical. As a result, the Rav has not received his salary for two months. On Saturday night I discussed all this by telephone with Mr. Levitanski. You are surely aware of this.

I also communicated to him my opinion. Considering the esteem the Frierdiker Rebbe* held for your shul and your Rav, I am sure that he would have asked the members of the kehilla* to advance the necessary funds. Then, at the next opportunity, a collection or appeal will be launched to obtain the sums needed to cover the deficit and to create a specific fund, in order to avoid having to take a loan.

I am very surprised that you do not mention the affairs of Mr. Robinson. I hope you will do so in your next letter.

I will conclude by briefly repeating an explanation developed during the chassidic farbrengen* of this Shabbos, that of Parshas Vayakhel.

Every word, every letter of the Torah in general and of the Written Torah in particular is counted. Thus, from a few words and a few letters, many halachos* can be derived. Yet in Vayakhel and Pekudei, the long description of the vessels of the Mishkan* and the garments of the Kohen* is repeated a second time, since it already appears in Terumah and Tetzaveh.

One can wonder about this. Why not simply say that Bnei Yisrael* made the vessels of the Mishkan and the garments of the Kohen as Hashem had commanded Moshe? Dozens of verses of the Torah would thereby have become superfluous.

The explanation that can be given is similar to the one cited regarding a comparable question. Why does Parshas Naso repeat twelve times the description of the offering of the nesi'im*[2]? It is said in this regard that each nasi*, by his offering, achieved a different accomplishment[3]. All this is explained by the Midrash on Parshas Naso, by Torah Or* at the end of Parshas Bereshis, p. 15, col. 2, and by Likkutei Torah*, Parshas Berachah, p. 98, col. 3.

What has just been said also applies to Parshiyos Vayakhel and Pekudei.

Terumah and Tetzaveh present, for the first time, the vessels of the Mishkan and the garments of the Kohen. In these parshiyos:

1. The command emanates from Hashem Himself[4].

2. It is addressed to Moshe, to whom no other can compare[5].

3. Moshe, being on Har Sinai*, was in a much loftier state than the one he experienced down here, since "he ate no bread and drank no water"[6].

It is not so for the vessels of the Mishkan and the garments of the Kohen described in Vayakhel and Pekudei, which are those that were made down here:

1. They were made by the Yidden*[7].

2. They were made in this world[8].

3. They were of physical gold, silver, and bronze[9].

Despite the great difference that may exist between a potential and its actual application, the Will of Hashem was fulfilled, and the promise "V'shachanti b'socham*" ("I shall dwell among them") was realized—in the physical sanctuary described by Vayakhel and Pekudei, and not in the spiritual one whose vision was granted to Moshe on Har Sinai.

We can derive from all this a moral lesson. One must not lose courage by asking how to put the Will of Hashem into practice, and how to be certain not to err, when each of us knows what his real situation is. Moreover, we find ourselves in the intense darkness of this bitter galus*.

But Hashem gives the assurance—on condition that one be generous, that is, that one act with the warmth and enthusiasm of Yiddishkeit* and Chassidus*—that "V'shachanti b'socham." Hashem helps so that one may put His Will into practice.

You will find enclosed a receipt.

Concerning the question raised about the shul, I have written a letter in the same spirit to Mr. Levitanski.

Notes

[1] Rav Y. Katz of Chicago. See, regarding him, letter no. 822.

[2] At the inauguration of the Mishkan, although each offering was identical.

[3] Even though the offering was always the same.

[4] It is therefore still spiritual.

[5] And who, from this point of view, is different from the rest of the Jewish people. See, regarding this, letter no. 923.

[6] He therefore transcended the existence of the world.

[7] And not by Moshe, all the more so not by Hashem Himself.

[8] And were therefore physical.

[9] And therefore composed of physical elements.
