By the grace of Hashem,

27 Adar Rishon 5711,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessing,

I was distressed by your long silence and by not having had any news from you. I was therefore particularly gratified to receive your letter, in which you inform me that, baruch Hashem*, you are feeling better. Of course, I will read the request for a blessing you sent me at the tziyun* of the Frierdiker Rebbe*.

I reiterate my request. You must meditate and fix in your mind that Hashem directs the world, as well as each man and woman among us in particular. There is therefore no reason to be anxious. It is clear that Hashem will cause everything to be for the best. It is not for us to substitute ourselves for Him in this domain. We must limit ourselves to Torah and mitzvos*, for which we have received free choice.

I am introducing here no new idea. All this is quite obvious and everyone is aware of it, but one may have only a superficial notion of it and, in practice, behave as if everything depended on oneself. In this way one complicates one's life and, in the most literal sense, one's daily existence. By contrast, when one is permeated with the idea that "Hashem is my shepherd," the body and the nefesh habahamis* feel that "I shall lack nothing."

My aim is in no way to lecture you, chas v'shalom*, but your pain and your sorrow—which are without foundation and surely without real existence—affect me. Chassidus* explains the difference between a nisayon* and the necessity to transform the matter of the world.

I hope to have good news from you, to learn that you are feeling better, as well as your wife, my close relative.

With my blessing,
