By the grace of Hashem,

To the close relative of my wife, Mrs. Devorah Leah*[1],

I bless and greet you,

I was saddened to learn of your state of health[2]. I have good hope that it will improve. May Hashem bring it about that your intervention according to the ways of nature, by following the doctor's prescriptions, enables you to obtain the fulfillment of what is clearly signified by the verse[3]: "The Eternal your Hashem will bless you in all that you do"[4] — so that you will fulfill this verse.

And furthermore, the part of man that is human, and even his animal aspect, pertains to his soul and to what concerns it. In contrast, the vegetative part of man is his body and what is connected to it — including his healing, his vitality, the fact of being in good health. But in truth, for every Jewish man and woman, the body is part of the moral life. This includes, of course, healing and good health. According to the formulation of the great master, the Rambam*, in his Laws of Opinions*, at the beginning of chapter 4 — who was himself a physician of both the soul and the body — "having a healthy and whole body is part of the ways of Hashem." ברכה ושלום!

בצער נודעתי ע"ד מצב בריאותה, ותקותי חזקה שהולך ומשתפר, ופעולתה בדרך הטבע - קיום הוראות רופא - יהי רצון שיקויים בזה מקרא מלא שדיבר הכתוב וברכך ה"א בכל אשר תעשה , ברפואה קרובה.

ובפרט אשר עומדים אנו ביום ראש השנה לאילנות, שנתוספים בו כוחות חדשים בעולם הצמח, והרי "האדם - עץ השדה", ועוד זאת שכל חלקי דומם צומח חי ומדבר נמצאים באדם, על דרך סגנון חכמינו ז"ל כל מה שיש בעולם דוגמתו נמצא באדם (הנקרא עולם קטן), אלא שמדבר שבאדם, ואפילו חי, שייך יותר להנשמה ועניני', משא"כ חלק הצומח הרי זה - בשטח הגוף, כולל רפואתו והיותו בבריאות הנכונה וכולי.

ברם גם הגוף ועניניו בכל אחד ואחת מבנ"י נכלל בחיי הרוח, ובסגנון המורה הגדול הוא הרמב"ם, אשר מקצועו הי' רופא הנפש והגוף גם יחד - היות הגוף בריא ושלם מדרכי ה' הוא (הל' דיעות ריש פ' ד').
