Igrot Kodesh · Letter 9258
Volume 24 · Letter 228 · 19 Kislev 5668 · To: long de l’année
By the grace of Hashem,
Zot Chanukah*[1] 5727,
Brooklyn, New York,
I greet and bless you,
I have duly received your letter of this Tuesday and those that preceded it[3]. The requests for blessing will be read, without taking a vow, at the tomb[4]. We are at the end and conclusion of the days of Chanukah, which are close to the 19th of Kislev[5] — day of good tidings[6]. One can therefore specify the common ground between the days of Chanukah and the 19th of Kislev.
The miracle of Chanukah came about through oil, which alludes to the inner dimension of the Torah[7]. This was the oil of the Temple lights, which were situated precisely in the Sanctuary — a place not everyone entered[8]. Moreover, they were kindled during the daytime[9]. Then, in the time of Mattityahu son of Yochanan the High Priest[10], the Jews gave of themselves to sanctify Hashem's Name, attained true unity, as it is said[11]: "with all your soul: even if He takes your soul"[12]. The miracle then occurred and, as a result, the lighting of the Chanukah candles was instituted — which each man and woman[13] must perform "at the doorway of his house, toward the outside" and precisely from sunset onward[14].
Now, the same applies to the study of the inner dimension of the Torah — to its oil. At first, this was concealed and hidden from all Torah scholars, reserved for an elite, and only in a discreet manner, never publicly. In these latter generations, however, it is a Mitzvah* to reveal all of this[15]. This was already the case in the time of the Ari Zal*. Then, with the liberation of 19 Kislev, the spreading of the wellsprings[16] to the outside began in an essential way — so that everyone could grasp and understand that Hashem "permeates the worlds" and "surrounds the worlds"[17].
May Hashem grant that each of us act in this spirit, in three respects[18]:
a) through spreading,
b) by ensuring that it pertains to the wellsprings proper,
c) so that they reach the outside,
with vitality and light, ever adding and illuminating. With my blessing for the revelation of the light of Chanukah throughout the year,
M. Schneerson,
P.S.: I respond to your questions[19]:
A) It is well known[20] that our Sages[21] affirm that all the transgressions of a groom are pardoned. And the same applies to the bride.
B) It is known that Chassidut* entirely excludes[20] sadness — all the more so, renunciation, especially when it has no basis — the more so since one can concretely verify to what extent this diminishes the ardor for Torah and Mitzvot*.
C) It follows that "the other side"*, which skillfully fulfills the mission entrusted to it[22], benefits above all from such a situation, and does so with stubbornness. Is it truly necessary to explain that one must not listen to the "old and foolish king"[23]?
D) The best remedy, when one finds oneself in an inappropriate state of mind, is in this case to study the revealed part of the Torah and Chassidut, with ardor and intensely — both by oneself and with another. But in any case, you have received the "mission" of being a Torah scholar in the literal sense and in the sense one can understand from this expression.
E) There is a beneficial practice for broadening the divine assistance one receives in this matter. It consists of the Tzedakah* of spreading the wellsprings[16] to the outside. This is self-evident.
F) The expression of our Sages[24]: "what one desires[20] in one's heart" concerns the choice of a tractate. In contrast, regarding the place[20] of study, tractate Avodah Zarah 19a speaks of what one "wants"[20], as reported in the Shulchan Aruch*, Yoreh Deah*, at the end of chapter 240.
G) A beautiful home gives a person breadth of mind[25]. You should therefore strive not to have a small apartment.
H) We conclude on a positive note. Each of you will therefore know true and deep joy.
Notes
[1] Last day of the festival.
[2] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Chassidic discourse entitled 'Blessed is He Who performed miracles', by the Tzemach Tzedek*, printed in the Kuntrass Maamar, published in Brooklyn in 5711, at the end of chapter 4", and in Or HaTorah*, Chanukah, vol. 5, p. 562a.
[3] See on his account letter no. 5561.
[4] Of Rabbi Rayats*.
[5] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "Moreover, Chanukah begins within the seven days following the 19th of Kislev. And the miracle occurred essentially on the first day, encompassing all the seven following days within it, as the Shaarei Orah explains in the discourse entitled 'The 25th of Kislev', chapter 72".
[6] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "'Tuesday, the 19th of the month of Kislev, day of good tidings', according to the expression of the responsa of the heavens, chapter 5, which does not, however, specify what this good news is. Note that in the year of the Admur HaZaken's liberation, the 19th of Kislev also fell on a Tuesday, when the word 'good' was said twice at the Creation, according to the letter of the Admur HaZaken printed in Beth Rabbi, vol. 1, chapter 19 (and in his Igrot Kodesh, vol. 1, letter no. 38). The same was true for the year and day of the death of the Maggid (of Mezeritch), according to the Kuntrass Chai Elul 5703, in the first note (in the Sefer HaSichot 5703, p. 155). Indeed, this event occurred many years after the composition of the responsa of the heavens. But even more: according to the Rabad, in the Sefer HaKabbalah, it is stated in the Megillat Taanit, reproduced in the Tur, Orach Chaim, chapter 580, that one should fast on the 9th of Tevet, 'but our Sages give no reason for it'. In fact, 'it was their divine inspiration that took such a form'. It was therefore on this date, in 4824, that Rav Yosef HaLevi HaNigard was assassinated. And this can be understood in light of what our Sages say in the Zohar, vol. 1, p. 204a: 'There are good days and bad days'. This also allows us to understand the affirmation of the Sages in tractate Taanit 29a, according to which 'merit is conferred upon a propitious day'. See also, notably, the Tosafot on tractate Taanit 29b, noting that many emphasize this difficulty". The Rabbi underlines the year 4824 in this note.
[7] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "See tractate Berachot 57a, which says: 'oil corresponds to the luminary of the Torah' and, in particular, the Zohar, vol. 3, p. 39a".
[8] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Kelim, chapter 1, Mishnah 9".

[10] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "He introduced splendor into these eight days, according to the Peri Etz Chaim, at the gate of Chanukah".

[12] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "According to the Tzeror HaMor on the verse Vaetchanan 6:4".

[24] The recipient wrote: "A person studies a passage of Torah only if he desires it in his heart, which alludes to the deep dimension of the will, as various texts establish. But not everyone is given to perceive the depth of his will. So how does one know which text to study?" See on this matter letter no. 9267.
