Volume 24 · Letter 227 · To: jour de Zot ‘Hanouka(4). Puisse D.ieu faire que se prolongent l’allumage et la cl

By the grace of Hashem,

Zot Chanukah*[1] 5727,
Brooklyn, New York,

I greet and bless you,

I have duly received your letter[2]. We arrive at the end and conclusion[3] of Chanukah, on the day of Zot Chanukah[4]. May Hashem grant that the lighting and the brightness of these candles be prolonged, as well as their effect, throughout all the days that follow.

In this way, the miracle[5] will be proclaimed and, according to Chassidut*[6], it will be done until the footsteps disappear in the street[7]. Thus, the foot — alluding to the portion of Divinity revealed to the congregation of Israel — will disappear. For it is said[8]: "the earth is My footstool" — particularly in this generation of the heel of Mashiach*, which truly corresponds to the feet and heels. And this street is the public domain, "the mountains of separation"[9].

Indeed, in the time of the wicked Greek empire, wayward men — the Greeks — entered the Temple, defiled its altar[10], and seized all the vessels of the Sanctuary[11]. Then the children of Israel, through their self-sacrifice[12], prevailed, rebuilt the altar, inaugurated it[13], together with the Menorah*[14] — whose lights they kindled on the 25th of Kislev — and restored them to their sanctity for the entire duration of their existence[15]. With my blessing,

M. Schneerson,

The installation of the Sefer Torah* at Kfar Chabad*[16] will follow the order set forth in a letter of my father-in-law, the Rabbi[17]. Nevertheless, it will not be said that this was written for the elevation of his soul. The event will take place on one of the following days: the 10th or 13th of Shevat, or at Purim Katan*.

You should consult the second edition of the Shulchan Aruch* of the Admur HaZaken*[18], at the end of chapter 1, which states: "One will read the description of the sacrifice immediately afterward"[19]. Indeed, one can genuinely wonder about this, for in practice, I have not seen that this is done. But perhaps this is precisely because the Admur HaZaken does not mention it in his Siddur*, in the order of the blessings. Nevertheless, can one, because of this, set aside what is stated clearly in the Shulchan Aruch of the Admur HaZaken, as we have seen?

A priori, the Tzedakah* that one gives must be dedicated to public needs, as the Magen Avraham* states, chapter 218, paragraph 2 — which is within everyone's reach. But here again, I have not seen that this practice is concretely adopted. It would therefore seem good to establish it. The connection with this Tzedakah can be found in what is explained in Iggeret HaKodesh*[20], in the paragraph introduced by "I have felt my smallness" — according to which every act of kindness must be accompanied by a feeling of humility, which broadens the kindness, as the Or HaTorah* explains, Parshat Vayera, from p. 97b.

Notes

[1] The last day of the festival.
[2] This letter was addressed to several people. See the Meah She'arim, published by Kehot in 5727, and Likutei Sichot, vol. 5, p. 455.
[3] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "See the teaching of our Sages in tractate Berachot 12a, according to which: 'everything follows from the conclusion'".
[4] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "The Chassidic discourse entitled 'Blessed is He Who performed miracles', by the Tzemach Tzedek*, published in Brooklyn in 5711, at the end of chapter 4 (see Or HaTorah, Chanukah, vol. 5, p. 962b), compares it to the eighth day of the inauguration of the Sanctuary. Concretely, it is then, according to the Halacha*, that one lights the greatest number of candles and that the Torah reading is the most important of the entire festival of Chanukah".
[5] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "The one who witnesses it says: 'Blessed is He Who performed miracles for our forefathers in those days at this time', according to tractate Shabbat 23a-b".
[6] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "See Or HaTorah by the Tzemach Tzedek (Chanukah, from p. 312b), in the Chassidic discourse entitled 'Rejoice and be glad', chapters 4 and 5".
[7] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Shabbat 21b, which then speaks of the 'footsteps of the Tarmodeans'. This is explained at the end of the Chassidic discourse entitled 'The candle of Chanukah', of 5643 (in the Sefer HaMaamarim 5643, p. 49) and at the end of the Chassidic discourse entitled 'It is a Mitzvah from sunset', of 5678 (in the Sefer HaMaamarim 5678, from p. 117), which states briefly: 'Tarmod is the anagram of Moredet, rebellion, as in the expression: one who rebels against her husband. In this sense, the Tarmodeans allude to the evil inclination, which obstructs and opposes. These men gathered small wood shavings, which allude to the tree of knowledge of good and evil. And they remained in the street, in the public domain, in the mountains of separation. Nevertheless, the lights of Chanukah reveal clarity, so that the rebels attain ecstasy. See the end of the first chapter of tractate Yevamot, the Emek HaMelech, p. 108a, Rashi's commentary on Divrei HaYamim 2, 8:4, and the Minchah Shai on the verse Melachim 1, 9:18'".
[8] Yeshayahu 66:1.
[9] See Sefer HaMaamarim Melukat, vol. 2, p. 25, and the references indicated in note 15.
[10] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Avodah Zarah 52b. See the Tosafot Yom Tov on tractate Megillah, chapter 3, Mishnah 6".
[11] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "Rashi's commentary on tractate Avodah Zarah 43a. According to the view of the Maor, in tractate Avodah Zarah 53b, which states that the Temple vessels were not defiled, the Greeks in this case took them away. New ones therefore had to be made and inaugurated".
[12] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "Indeed, the weak rose up against the strong. See in this regard the introduction to the Shaarei Orah".
[13] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Maharsha on tractate Shabbat 21a. That is why the festival is called Chanukah — inauguration. Nevertheless, only the inauguration of the altar is mentioned here. At the beginning of the Chassidic discourse entitled 'Our Sages taught: the lights of Chanukah', by my father-in-law, the Rabbi, delivered in 5704 (in the Sefer HaMaamarim 5704, p. 82), it is specified that one of the reasons the festival is called Chanukah is the inauguration of the Temple and the altar".
[14] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "According to Rashi's commentary cited earlier, this indeed refers to 'all the vessels' of the Sanctuary".
[15] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "The Rambam, Laws of Temple Vessels, chapter 1, paragraph 13, notes: 'They never lose their sanctity'. See the Midrash Rabbah and the Tanchuma at the beginning of Parshat Beha'alotecha, which speak of 'eternal lights'. According to the Ramban, this alludes to the lights of Chanukah". The Rabbi underlines the word "eternal" here.
[16] This paragraph was added to the preceding letter in the copy addressed to Rav Chaim Shmaryahu Gourary. See on his account letter no. 3808.
[17] See the Igrot Kodesh of Rabbi Rayats, vol. 6, letter no. 1612.
[18] This paragraph was added to the preceding letter. See Likutei Sichot, vol. 17, p. 427.
[19] This concerns the case of the man obligated to bring a thanksgiving offering, Korban Todah*.
