Igrot Kodesh · Letter 9256
Volume 24 · Letter 226 · 30 Kislev 5727 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
30 Kislev 5727,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Y.[1],
I greet and bless you,
Basing myself[2] on the teaching of our Sages[3] that importance can be conferred upon an object, I enclose a Chassidic* discourse of the Rabbi[4], which has been published these days. Indeed, this period is propitious, since we are in the month of the liberation of 19 Kislev*, the Rosh Hashanah* of all that pertains to Chassidut*. Furthermore, the days of Chanukah* add light. With my respects and my blessing that you bring me good news of all this, in good health,
M. Schneerson,
P.S.: I have already taken a step forward by responding to a question not put to me. I will therefore take one more step, concerning a question I have already asked — a request I have already made without having obtained any response[5]. I am alluding to the great necessity, the interest, and the merit of the greatest number that would be obtained if you were to set down the words and directives that you received from the Rabbi[6] over all these years[7] — especially with regard to concrete action, the teachings transmitted orally, and those you learned from his own conduct[8]. As I have said, I recall that, according to what you wrote, you do not possess notes. Nevertheless, I reiterate my point. It is absolutely inconceivable that all that you saw and heard, within those four cubits, over many years — indeed, years that were also qualitatively numerous[9] — has already been published, or that the contrary of this was published, as you insinuate by allusion in your letter. Human nature is such that when one begins to write, the memory of one event or saying brings forth, evokes, and recalls another event, and then ideas and facts follow one upon another.
It is obviously unnecessary to point out to you how important all this is. I will simply add that on many occasions I have been asked why I do not suggest that you write your memoirs in the manner just described. Without a doubt, on the basis of our friendship of those years[10], in our country[11], you will respond to my request with goodwill and in an ever-increasing manner. Indeed, this request does not come from me alone. I am discharging, in this instance, the mission entrusted to me by the Sages who formulated this request[12]. From the news I receive about you and, in particular, from what is said in the newspapers, it appears that your state of health is improving. Nevertheless, as stated at the beginning of the Shulchan Aruch*, Yoreh Deah*, it is necessary to clarify a situation, even when it is presumed to be known.
