Volume 24 · Letter 222 · To: long de l’année et même des années suivantes

By the grace of Hashem,

Days of Chanukah* 5727,
Brooklyn, New York,

To the close relative of my wife,
Madame Dvora Lea[1],

I bless and greet you,

I received your letter in its time, together with what was enclosed[2]. Please forgive me for having waited until now to acknowledge it, for various reasons — and above all, in accordance with the teaching of our Sages[3] that "merit is conferred upon a day that is by nature propitious". We are indeed in the days of Chanukah, during which candles are lit from sunset onward, in increasing number, day by day. This lighting is performed in one place, and in such a manner that it illuminates the outside — reaching there, nonetheless, through a light emanating from within, situated, in the words of our Sages[4], "at the doorway of his house, toward the outside"[5].

The effects of Chanukah, the first time, were felt throughout the year and even in subsequent years, since "they entered Your courtyard, cleansed… purified… and kindled lights"[6]. The same can therefore apply to the effects of Chanukah each year, which are a commemoration commensurate with what was done by our ancestors in those days.

There is another specific point regarding Chanukah[7]. The candles of this festival are lit on account of the miracle of the Menorah*, which had seven branches. Nevertheless, the practice of the Mitzvah* surpasses its cause, and one lights eight. Apparently, light and joy are two distinct notions. Moreover, the verse[8] itself differentiates them and says: "light is sown for the righteous, and joy for the upright of heart". And our Sages emphasize in tractate Taanit 15a: "not everything is for the light and not everything is for the joy. The righteous have the light and the upright, the joy". Nevertheless, it is absolutely certain that these two notions are linked. And one can deduce this link from the verse[9]: "From the mouth of the Most High, no evil issues forth" — or again, according to the well-known formulation[10]: "All that Hashem does is for the good". Yet, the human intellect is by nature limited; the veil of the world surrounding it, the dimness in which it moves, increase this limitation. The result is that one does not reach the depths of things. And when, through an effect of divine goodness, one illuminates one's surroundings, the channel and means of doing so are our Torah and its Mitzvot, of which it is said[11]: "The candle is a Mitzvah and the Torah is a light". Such a light illuminates, shows the true aspect of every thing and of what flows from it. From then on, through it, one finally attains joy.

With regard to the Mitzvot of Chanukah and their content, women are equally obligated as men. In this case, as Rashi* — foremost of all commentators — explains in his commentary on tractate Shabbat 23a: "the miracle came about through a woman". For someone like you, it will surely be unnecessary to specify the meaning or consequences of what has just been set forth. Conveying my greetings to your son[12], I wish you both a luminous Chanukah and a revelation of light for all the days that follow. With my blessing,
