Igrot Kodesh · Letter 9250

Volume 24 · Letter 220 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,

Days of Chanukah* 5727,
Brooklyn, New York,

To the great Rav, distinguished and pleasant Chassid* who fears Hashem, of many accomplishments, Rav L.[1],

I greet and bless you,

I have learned with pleasure[2] that the members of the Talmud* and Mishnah* association of your synagogue are organizing a celebration to mark the eighteenth[3] year of your rabbinate in this community. May Hashem grant that you be truly the "master of the place"[4], in the full sense of the term. Thereafter, you will remain the master of that place by making it a place where Torah* dwells[5], imbued with fear and love of Hashem — sentiments corresponding to the three hundred and sixty-five prohibitions and the two hundred and forty-eight positive commandments[6] — through which one can truly fulfill the Mitzvot* in practice.

You will strengthen the spread of the study of our Torah, the Torah of life, of its revealed part and its deep teaching, in accordance with the teaching of these days of Chanukah, in which one increases day by day: "the candle[7] is a Mitzvah and the Torah is a light"[8]. With my respects, sending greetings to all the participants, and with my blessing that you have long days, good and luminous years,

[4] According to the expression commonly used of a Rav.
[5] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "See tractates Baba Metzia 85a and Arachin 16b. The reward is defined in tractates Pesachim 86b and Yoma 12a. A virtuous conduct distances strictness from it, according to the Maharik, chapter 21, mentioned by the Siftei Cohen on Choshen Mishpat, chapter 7, paragraph 12".
[6] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "According to chapter 4 of the Tanya. See the commentary on the Rambam, Laws of the Foundations of the Torah, at the beginning of the second chapter".
