Volume 24 · Letter 215 · 20 Kislev 5727 · To: distingué ‘Hassid…(1)

By the grace of Hashem, at the conclusion of the

holy Shabbat* 20 Kislev 5727,
Brooklyn, New York,

To the distinguished Chassid*…[1],

I greet and bless you,

I have duly received your letters. May Hashem grant that you bring me good news of all this — a twofold goodness: the superior good that is hidden and which becomes a visible and tangible good[2]. I enclose the Chassidic* discourse entitled "He redeemed my soul in peace", which was delivered a Jubilee*[3] ago, in 5677, by Rabbi Shalom DovBer[4]. It was recently recited in public[5], at the Chassidic gatherings of the 19th of Kislev, day of good tidings[6] — last Friday, when the word "good" was pronounced twice at the Creation — an important Hillula* of our holy master[7] — and of the 20th of Kislev, when the liberation became known[8] and the joy was immense. Moreover, this year, that day is additionally a Shabbat, which confers an elevation upon the 19th of Kislev and reveals its delight.

You will surely endeavor to have this discourse studied, both publicly and individually, during the following days — particularly the days of Chanukah*, which are approaching for good — during which the miracle[9] of the vial of oil[10] is proclaimed, which alludes to the "secrets of secrets" of the Torah[11], ever adding and illuminating more and more.

This year is complete[12], since it has a second Adar*. Furthermore, its months of Cheshvan* and Kislev* are full[13]. This integrity and fullness will therefore be expressed in all areas of the year, both material and spiritual, general and specific.

Moreover, Rosh Hashanah*[14] was immediately followed by the holy Shabbat — both in the diaspora and in the Holy Land — since there as well the festival lasts two days. This was already the case[15] when the new month was established upon hearing witnesses — both for the Jews of the exile, for the majority of those in Eretz Yisrael*, and very often[16] for those in Jerusalem as well. Now, sadness is absent from Shabbat[17]. That day requires no effort on the part of man[18]. On the contrary, it is said[19] of it that "Hashem's blessing enriches"[20], that one must experience pleasure therein — above and below, a pleasure that is both physical and spiritual[21]. With my blessing,

Menachem Schneerson,

[1] This letter was addressed to several people. See the booklet entitled "He redeemed my soul in peace" of 5677, published by Kehot on the eve of Chanukah 5727, the Sefer HaMaamarim 5677, from p. 242, and Likutei Sichot, vol. 10, p. 275.
[2] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "See Iggeret HaKodesh, at the end of chapter 11, tractate Kiddushin 40a, Or HaTorah of the Tzemach Tzedek, Bereishit, pp. 33a and 34a".
[3] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Zohar, vol. 1, p. 95b, which says: 'Freedom always comes from the Jubilee,' and the Likutei Torah, Devarim, p. 60b".
[4] This discourse was printed in 5627 as an independent booklet, then included in the Sefer HaMaamarim 5627, from p. 88.
[5] It was recited on the 19th of Kislev, then on Shabbat Parshat Vayeshev, 20 Kislev 5627. See on this matter the Sefer HaMaamarim Melukat, vol. 1, from p. 498, and the Sefer HaMaamarim 5627, from p. 244.
[6] See on this matter letter no. 9258. The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "See the 'responsa of the heavens', chapter 5, which say: 'Tuesday, the 19th of Kislev, is a day of good tidings'".
[7] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "According to the words of the Admur HaZaken, in a letter addressed to 'the scholar, Chassid of Berditchev', when he returned from Petersburg". This letter appears in the Igrot Kodesh of the Admur HaZaken, vol. 1, letter no. 38. It is in fact the Likutei Torah, Shir HaShirim, p. 18c, which uses, with regard to the Rabbi of Berditchev, the expression: "The scholar, Chassid".
[8] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "See the talk of 19 Kislev 5692, in the Likutei Diburim, vol. 4 (from p. 749b) and that of 19 Kislev 5693, chapter 20, in the Likutei Diburim, vol. 1 (p. 29a)".
[9] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "Indeed, when one does not proclaim the miracle of the oil, one cannot recite the blessing over the candles — not even after the fact — according to the later Decisors on the Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim, at the end of chapter 672. This is not the case, however, for the recitation of the Al HaNissim paragraph, which celebrates the miracle of the war, and which was from the outset instituted in the silent prayer. See on this matter the responsa of the Tzemach Tzedek, gate of addenda, chapter 11. But this point will not be developed here".
[10] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Likutei Torah, Parshat Re'eh".
[11] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Likutei Torah, Shir HaShirim, from p. 2d, the lengthy explanation of the Imrei Binah at the gate of Shema Yisrael, from chapter 54. See the words of Rabbi Rashab*, who compares the accusations and liberation of 19 Kislev to the olive, which when crushed yields its oil (as in tractate Menachot 53b, Midrash Shemot Rabbah, at the beginning of chapter 36, and) according to the talk of 19 Kislev 5663, published in the Sefer Torat Shalom, p. 26".
[12] See on this matter letter no. 9233. The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate Arachin 31a. See also the Reshimot of the Tzemach Tzedek on Tehillim, on the verse 'The Torah of the Lord is perfect', chapter 100, 4, 8", in the Yohel Or, from p. 67.
[13] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Rambam*, Laws of Sanctification of the New Month, chapter 8, paragraph 6".
[14] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "The same applies to Rosh Hashanah of Chassidut, the 19th of Kislev".
[15] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "According to the Rambam, Laws of Sanctification of the New Month, chapter 5, paragraphs 7 and 8. So too states the Shulchan Aruch of the Admur HaZaken, chapter 600, paragraph 4. However, this is not the view of Rashi, commenting on tractate Rosh Hashanah 18a, unlike the Tosafot at the same reference. See also the Lechem Mishneh, Laws of Sanctification of the New Month, chapter 3, paragraph 9".
[16] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "The Zohar, vol. 3, p. 231a, says: 'Rosh Hashanah always has two days and never just one'. One can thus explain the addition and precision of the Admur HaZaken, in his Likutei Torah, at the beginning of the Chassidic discourse entitled 'He will revive us after two days', Devarim, p. 63b, which states: 'Rosh Hashanah always has two days, including when the month was sanctified upon hearing witnesses'. Indeed, why say 'including when the month was sanctified upon hearing witnesses' rather than 'always'? See in this regard the Peri Etz Chaim, at the gate of Rosh Hashanah, at the end of chapter 4, which says: 'Rosh Hashanah always has two days. Before the destruction of the Temple, we had the power to observe only one day. But now, after its destruction, it is necessary that the festival have two days, as the Zohar specifies'. The Yerushalmi*, tractate Eruvin, chapter 3, paragraph 9, recalls that these two days were instituted by the first prophets. The Tosefta on tractate Rosh Hashanah, chapter 1, paragraph 10, specifies that it happened, already in Moses' time, that Rosh Hashanah had two days".
[17] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "Yerushalmi, tractate Berachot, chapter 2, paragraph 7".
[18] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "Zohar, vol. 2, p. 88b. Torah Or, at the beginning of Parshat Chayei Sarah. Derech Mitzvotecha, on the Mitzvah of not kindling fire on Shabbat".
[19] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "Yerushalmi, same reference".
[20] Mishlei 10:22.
[21] The Rabbi notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Shulchan Aruch of the Admur HaZaken, chapter 288, paragraph 3".
