Igrot Kodesh · Letter 9234
By the grace of Hashem,
16 Marcheshvan* 5727,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the distinguished and pleasant Chassid* who fears Hashem, chosen of the people, surpassing, seeking the good of his people, of generous conduct, from an illustrious family, Rav Shneur Zalman*[1] Shlita*,
I greet you and bless you,
I hope that upon receiving this letter you will have already received my greetings transmitted from here by the Holy Land visitors, may it be restored and rebuilt, who were visiting here.[2] They themselves conveyed your greetings to me and I thank you once more. An emissary is presumed to carry out the mission entrusted to him.[3] They will therefore convey to you not only my greetings, but also some points of what was discussed here during this seventh month,[4] which is, as our Sages explain,[5] "sated[6] in all respects."
Here is what this letter is about. I have just received some information about a man who contributes greatly to Tzedakah* in general, and to that linked to the dissemination of Torah and its Mitzvot* in particular. He possesses great qualities and combines many positive accomplishments. His name is Yitzchak Polak and he lives at 22 Spinoza Street in Tel Aviv. There is surely no need to explain the importance of what is thus accomplished, for, according to the photocopies that reached me, many of our brethren, the children of Israel, have already turned to him — both men devoted to Torah study and those characterized by their good deeds. They have all made the fervent and passionate request to be able to fulfill their debt as quickly and as fully as possible. Not only has he acted thus in the past, but furthermore, I very much hope and want to believe that he will do so in the future. I mean that not only will he continue his good actions, but he will also maintain his Tzedakah* and his positive attitude in his relationships with men, as he does in his relationship with Hashem.
However, his state of health is also not good[7] and he therefore needs kindness and mercy — a great and immense mercy. Naturally, I do not involve myself in the judgment to which he is subject, nor in the way it is managed, especially since many others have already written to you about this matter and given you all the details concerning him. In practical terms — for what Chassidut* calls the "final synthesis"[8] — it is necessary to have him released from prison. He must return home, to his family, as soon as possible, in a good and fruitful moment. Certainly, what has just been said may not be very protocol-conforming. Nevertheless, you surely remember my view that elements outside of protocol are often more effective than those that are part of it. This is especially so for you yourself and all that concerns you.
I was saddened to learn, some time ago, that you had been hospitalized. You know, however, that I do not use the word "hospital"[9] — which is at odds with its objective and raison d'être, since it describes the condition of a person before[10] he is admitted and treated. It was specified to me that you went there for tests. Nevertheless, this step should be superfluous, for a person is presumed to be in good health. He should be able to say that all is well. I learned, however, that you have already returned home and resumed your work some days ago. I therefore have good hope that you have fully recovered your health.
Just as one fulfills all the Tzedakah* one should receive during the year by requesting and receiving a honey cake on the eve of Yom Kippur*,[11] may Hashem bring about that this assistance given to you by the doctors — through this entry and exit — be sufficient for the year that is coming, for us, for good. With my regard, my respects and my blessing,
M. Schneerson,
P.S.: To maintain my extra-protocol attitude, to which I alluded above, I will report the following facts. I learned with pleasure these days, from an American Jewish tourist who spent Shabbat Nachamu* and the following Shabbat in Moscow and who prayed there at the synagogue, how he related to his acquaintances — without[10] ulterior motive — after having established that there was no reason for concern,[13] that I had spoken with you during your visit[14] to New York, with friendship and warmth. The following Shabbat, these Jews continued this conversation with him, about your visit here — or, to use their expression, "at Lubavitch*"[15] — at the conclusion of the holy Shabbat Nachamu. They were particularly pleased by this. I note that several people frequenting this synagogue made his acquaintance, as is the custom there, by quickly approaching him and exchanging a few words:
"Where are you from?"
"From New York."
"Are you Lubavitch*?"
"No." Indeed, I do not know him.
"But you have heard of it?"
To this day, this tourist is still filled with wonder at the joy expressed by these men when they learned of your visit to a Lubavitch* celebration.

[1] C. Z. Shazar, President of Eretz Yisrael*. See, regarding him, letter no. 9051.
[2] To spend the Tishrei* holidays near the Rabbi.
[3] According to tractate Eruvin* 31b. It is therefore certain that these guests, upon returning to the Holy Land, will indeed carry out the mission entrusted to them.
[4] That of Tishrei*, during the Chassidic* gatherings these guests attended.
[5] In Midrash Vayikra Rabba*, chapter 29, paragraph 8. See the beginning of the Sefer HaMaamarim* 5710.
[6] With spiritual forces for the entire remainder of the year.
[7] Presumably due to his imprisonment, on behalf of which the Rabbi intervenes here.
[8] What concretely results from the facts just presented. See, on this expression, the Sefer HaMaamarim* 5700, p. 11.
[9] In Hebrew, Beit HaCholim*, literally "the house of the sick." The Rabbi prefers the expression Beit HaRofim*, "the house of the doctors." See, on this matter, letter no. 8213.
[10] The Rabbi underlines the words: "before" and "without ulterior motive."
[11] See the Torat Menachem*, Hitva'aduyot*, vol. 2, p. 9.
[12] Solely for the purpose of relating the facts, without expecting any reaction from his listeners.
[13] That the KGB was not monitoring this exchange between an American tourist and Russian Jews.
[14] Made by C. Z. Shazar to the Rabbi at the conclusion of Shabbat Nachamu*, 13 Menachem Av*, as related by letter no. 9190.
[15] This is how these Russian Jews referred to the Rabbi's study house, 770 Eastern Parkway.
