Eve of "the time of our rejoicing"[1] 5727,

To the distinguished and pleasant Chassid* who fears Hashem, chosen of the people, surpassing, seeking the good of his people, of generous conduct, from an illustrious family, Rav Shneur Zalman*[2] Shlita*,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of 6 Tishrei*, along with what was enclosed, and I thank you for it. We are on the eve of "the time of our rejoicing"[1] and Rosh Hashana* has passed, with all that is at odds with joy.[3] May Hashem bring it about that you yourself — who will have long days and good years — together with your family, feel a true and deep joy, as the Admor HaZaken* explains[4] regarding the title given to the holiday of Sukkot*: "the time of our rejoicing" — a double joy: Israel's joy in Hashem, in His Torah, and Hashem's joy in Israel, "the people that is close to Him."[5] In the words of the verses: "May Israel rejoice in his Creator"[6] and: "May Hashem rejoice in His creations."[7] With my regard, my respects and my blessing for joyous holidays,

P.S.: You have surely taken note of the collection of Chabad* customs which appeared recently[8] and which I enclose. It is only a first edition and the next will have many additions and additional notes.[9] I also allow myself to enclose a copy of the letter addressed to everyone for this year,[10] the year of Hakhel*. I add that I do so on the condition and in the hope that you will ask your collaborators to send me a copy of the letter you yourself addressed to everyone for this year. I have searched for it in the press, but found only excerpts. I thank you in advance.

הנני לאשר בתודה קבלת מכתבו מיום ו' תשרי, עם המצורף אליו.

ובעמדנו ערב זמן שמחתנו, ובפרט שכבר הי' בינתיים רה"ש וכו' שמפסיקים ענינים דהיפך השמחה,

יהי רצון שמר שליט"א ומשפחתו שיחיו תהי' אצלם שמחה אמתית ופנימיית, כפירוש רבנו הזקן בהתואר של חג הסוכות - "זמן שמחתנו" - שמחה כפולה, שמחת ישראל בה' ובתורתו ושמחת ה' בישראל עם קרובו, ובסגנון הכתוב: ישמח ישראל בעושיו וישמח הוי' במעשיו.
