Question:
In the Sefer HaMaamarim* of the Rabbi Maharach*, Torat Shmuel 5628, there is a Chassidic* discourse entitled: "In order to understand what our Sages say about Adam*, the first man" [A]. Its second chapter, on p. 66, explains:[1] "It is said[2] regarding Moshe*: 'You shall place some of your splendor upon them.' There was a genuine gift, so that the light given to Yehoshua* and the elders was taken from Moshe, as it is said:[3] 'I will draw upon the spirit that is upon you.'" Yet, commenting on the verse Beha'alotecha* 11:17, Rashi* explains: "What was Moshe likened to at that moment? To a candle placed on a candelabra, from which all other candles are lit, without anything being lacking from its light" [B]. This question was posed to a Rav*, who was unable to provide an answer [C].
Answer:
[A] This discourse is based on the Derech Mitzvotecha*, at the Mitzvah* of appointing a king.[4]
[B] See the Sifri* at that reference.[5]
[C] How many seconds[6] did all of you together[6] devote to thinking of an answer to this question? And, beyond all that you present, this observation also raises an additional question. Why do Rashi and the Sifri not give the same interpretation of the verse "And you shall give" as the one said regarding Yehoshua, especially since this verse seems to present a more novel aspect?
One must conclude that the verse "And you shall give" receives here a different meaning. This conclusion reinforces[6] the question that the Chassidic discourse poses in any case, since it also cites the elders. Yet, regarding them, there is no mention of "giving." Why, then, say that what was transmitted to the elders was lacking in Moshe? One may therefore propose the following explanation. The two opinions stated regarding the elders are found in Midrash Bamidbar Rabba*, chapter 15:
A) Moshe was, relative to the elders, like one who lights a candle, according to paragraph 19.
B) The elders received the reward that had been granted to Moshe, according to paragraph 25.
The difference between the two opinions is thus quite clear. It is then emphasized that nothing was lacking in Moshe, and this can be understood simply, because it was Hashem Who filled the lack. It follows that:
1) paragraph 25 is not written like paragraph 19 and says: "To Moshe himself, nothing was lacking," for according to this opinion, the lack was only at the moment of transmission,[7]
2) it is added here that this occurred "at the end of the forty years",[6] which is not stated beforehand, although the verse cited also concerns the end of the forty years,[8]
3) one can also understand that the proofs cited by the two paragraphs are not the same. All this is quite clear.
There is, on the other hand, only one opinion regarding Yehoshua, relating to the verse "And you shall give",[6] as stated. And one cannot think, even with difficulty, that this has a figurative meaning, which would imply[6] that there must be two actions: "and you shall lay your hands" and "and you shall give." This allows one to understand the interpretation of Midrash Rabba, chapter 21, paragraph 15: "And you shall lay your hands: like one who lights a candle from another. And you shall give: like one who pours a vessel into another."
This interpretation of the Chassidic discourse raises the following question. What was given to Yehoshua created the lack in Moshe because of the distance separating one from the other. How much more was this the case for the elders. This is therefore why they are also mentioned in this discourse. Thus, it is stated that this was indeed the case for them as well, which allows one not to dismiss entirely the other opinion expressed, regarding them, in the development of this discourse. One must admit that, according to this interpretation, Moshe indeed lost his level when this was the case for the children of Israel, for it is said:[9] "Why did I grant you greatness, if not for them?" Rashi, in his commentary on the Torah, seeks above all the simple meaning of the verse. For this reason, he cites the image of one who lights a candle from another following[6] his commentary:
1) previously, at verse 11:16, he noted that Moshe's strength was weakened like that of a woman, which alludes to Malchut*, the Attribute of Divine Sovereignty at the origin of the worlds of Beriya*, Yetzirah* and Assiyah*,
2) subsequently, at verse 11:22, one understands[6] that Moshe spoke harsh words. But Rashi considers that, even at that moment, one could still say of Moshe: "In all My house he is faithful," according to the opinion cited by this Chassidic discourse,
3) and one can understand the verse Shemot* 32:7. See also Torah Or*, p. 3a.

[6] The Rabbi underlines the words: "seconds," "all of you together," "reinforces," "at the end of the forty years," "and you shall give," "would imply," "following" and "understands."
[7] Since afterwards Hashem filled the lack.
