Igrot Kodesh · Letter 9219

Volume 24 · Letter 189 · 28 Elloul 5726 · To: chapitre 13

By the grace of Hashem*,

28th of Elul* 5726,
Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I am writing in response to your letter, which reached me with considerable delay. You tell me about your daughter and her conduct. One can concretely verify that, very often[1], it is preferable to intervene through friends and acquaintances rather than through direct action by close relatives and parents. These friends will affirm their position once, a second time, and yet again, with words that come from the heart[2]. You will surely find some people capable of intervening in this way, without her knowing that the request and initiative came from you, from the parents.

Of course, you are right to write that a complete break in your relationship with her and the fact of her living alone are not desirable. Nevertheless, one can proceed in the manner described above without giving the impression of thereby granting tacit approval to her undesirable conduct. Both elements can surely be reconciled, and may Hashem* grant that you bring me good news.

Moreover, we are in the month of Elul* and one knows the words of the Admor Hazaken*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, in his Likkutei Torah*, Parsha Devarim*, p. 32, which sets forth the parable of a King in the field, just before returning to the city. At that time, all the townspeople go out to meet Him and He receives each one with benevolence, showing a smiling countenance. You should consult this text.

It would be good to have your Tefillin* checked, as well as the Mezuzot* of your home, to ensure their validity according to Halacha*, insofar as these Tefillin* and Mezuzot* have not been verified in the past twelve months. Every weekday, before...
