Igrot Kodesh · Letter 9216
By the grace of Hashem*,
23rd of Elul* 5726,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the attention of the distinguished and pleasant Chassid* who fears Hashem*, chosen of the people, surpassing others, seeking the welfare of his people, generous in conduct, of illustrious lineage, Rav* Shneur Zalman[1] Shlita*,
I greet you and bless you,
I was pained[2] to learn of the passing of the distinguished Chassid* who feared Hashem*, Rav* Avraham, may he rest in peace. May Hashem* console you among all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. With my regards, respect, and blessing to be inscribed and sealed for a good year.
The wording of the condolences — "May Hashem* console you among all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem" — seems, at first glance, to be difficult to understand, since it links individual consolation with the mourning over Zion and Jerusalem. In fact, this is precisely the profound idea of this consolation, which operates on two levels:
A) The individual mourning is, in a certain sense, part of the general mourning over the destruction of the Temple and of Jerusalem. Just as the mourning over Zion and Jerusalem is destined to be transformed into great joy when the Temple is rebuilt, so too will individual mourning be transformed. And when Hashem* consoles those who mourn Zion and Jerusalem, He simultaneously consoles the individual mourner. Thus the promise of consolation is all the more certain and sure[3].
B) Furthermore, the praise in the formula — "among all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem" — is itself a source of comfort. For it designates the mourner as one whose grief is that of a truly devoted Jew, whose heart aches for the Divine Presence that is in exile, and for the suffering of the Shechinah*[4] — and this is a mark of genuine Jewish feeling. Thus, the praise indeed relates to the rebuke. Such are the blessing and the promise formulated regarding individual consolation, "among all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem," may it be restored and rebuilt, very soon and in our days, Amen[5][6].
