Igrot Kodesh · Letter 9211
Volume 24 · Letter 181 · 16 Elloul 5726 · To: Yossef
By the grace of Hashem*,
16th of Elul* 5726,
To my wife's close relative[1], Mrs. Devorah Leah[2] and to Mr. Yosef,
It is with much pain that I express my condolences to you for your bereavement, following the loss of our distinguished relative, the Chassid* who feared Hashem*, Rav* Shlomo HaCohen[3]. In the traditional formula, "May Hashem* console you among all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem." In the future, may you know no more pain and sorrow. May you receive only goodness and positivity, always and every day. With my blessing to be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, a good that is visible and tangible.
The wording of the condolences[4] seems difficult to understand, since it links consolation with the mourning of Zion and Jerusalem. In fact, this is precisely the idea of this consolation, which is twofold, although time does not permit me to elaborate:
A) Individual mourning is, in a certain sense, a part of the general mourning over the destruction of the Temple and of Jerusalem. Just as the mourning over Zion and Jerusalem will be transformed into joy, so too will individual mourning. And when Hashem* will console those who mourn Zion and Jerusalem, He will, in the same act, console the individual mourner as well. This is indeed the promise and the blessing embedded in the formula of consolation.
B) Moreover, the praise contained in the formula — "among all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem" — is itself a source of comfort. For it means that this mourning and grief are, in fact, a sign of closeness and connection to the holiness of Zion and Jerusalem. And in this respect, the praise indeed relates to the rebuke. Such are the blessing and the promise formulated regarding individual consolation — "among all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem," may it be restored and rebuilt, very soon and in our days, Amen[6].
