By the grace of Hashem*,

2nd of Elul* 5726,
Brooklyn,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav* Aharon,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of 25 Menachem Av*[1] and I respond to your question. If our Sages rule[2] clearly that one who sustains even a single*[3] soul of Israel is considered as if he has sustained the entire world, how much more so when it concerns several dozen souls and an entire community. Now, when the children of Israel study the Torah*, which is our life, to the exclusion of all else[4], when this study has its effect on the existence of the one who dedicates himself to it, when it "leads to action," as our Sages say[5], when one can truly hope that it structures life — one can indeed sustain himself, draw vitality from it, and receive, not only in the World to Come, but also in this world[6], a life worthy of the name.

It follows that what you should do in the future is quite clear. You will accede to the request of the community and continue your work there for some further time. In so doing, you will also broaden Hashem's* blessing in what concerns you personally, and, most importantly, you will derive great genuine satisfaction from your children. With my blessing for good news, and to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

ובמענה לשאלתו: באם המקיים נפש אחת מישראל - פס"ד חז"ל ברור הוא שכאילו קיים עולם מלא עאכו"כ עשיריות נפשות ועד לקהלה שלימה. והרי לימוד בנ"י את התורה - שהיא אך היא חיינו - באופן שמשפיעה על חיי הלומד (בסגנון חז"ל - לימוד המביא לידי מעשה) ועד שתקוה חזקה שתעצב את חייו, הרי עי"ז מקיים אותו, מחייהו ומביאו לחיי עוה"ב וגם לחיי עוה"ז (הראויים לשם-חיים).

ועפ"ז מובן שדרכם בעתיד ברורה - למלאות בקשת הקהלה ולהמשיך בפעולותיהם בה עוד משך זמן. ויתוסף עי"ז בברכת ה' גם בעניניהם הפרטים ובנקודה העקרית - רוב נחת אמיתי מכל יו"ח שי'.
