I greet you and bless you,

I received your letter of 19 Menachem Av* with pleasure, and I thank you for taking the trouble to share your impressions following the visit of a group of Chabad* people at a Bar Mitzvah* celebration in the Negev region.

A day that is auspicious by nature confers merit[1] and today is Rosh Chodesh* Elul*, the beginning of the month of mercy and favor. Our Sages[2] have said that during this month Hashem* reveals Himself as a King who goes out to meet His people in the field — and He receives each one with benevolence and a smiling countenance.

As for the content of your letter: the joy and enthusiasm you describe among those who participated in the Bar Mitzvah* celebration, and the positive impressions they received, are entirely understandable. When Jews gather together for a matter of holiness and Torah*, the presence of Hashem* rests among them and elevates them all.

The work of Chabad* emissaries in your region deserves encouragement and support. Their influence on all those around them — those who are far and those who are close — is of great importance. This is particularly true in the Negev, where the population is varied and many are in need of a connection to their Jewish roots.

You mention that we met in our youth in my father's home in Yekaterinoslav. At a future opportunity, please tell me what your name was then, for I do not recall the name Gover from that time. You have therefore surely changed your family name, as is the custom in the Holy Land.

ומגלגלין זכות ליום זכאי, שהיום הוא ראש חודש אלול שאז מתחילים לאחל זה לזה כתיבה וחתימה טובה, שהנני מאחל למר ולכל אשר לו.

מזכיר שנפגשנו בימי נעורינו בבית אבא ז"ל ביקטרינוסלב. ובטח בהזדמנות הבאה יודיעני שמו אז, כיון שלא זכור לי השם "גובר" מהימים ההם, אלא שבטח שינה שם המשפחה כנהוג באה"ק.
