Seventh year, that of the Shemitta*[1],
Brooklyn, New York,
To the Rav*, distinguished and pleasant Chassid* who fears Hashem, of fine conduct and many accomplishments, Rav M. P. HaCohen[1],
I greet and bless you,
I have duly received your letter[3] bringing me good news, the joy of the celebration[4] organized for the Sages[5], the participants in public study[6], learning the light that is the oral[8] Torah*[7] and completing the tractate of Sukka*[9], according to the precise note of the Oshri*[10] at the end of this text.
May Hashem therefore bring it about that this be at a good and fruitful moment. Just as you have completed the study of this tractate, you will begin others and complete them as well[11]. This will be, according to the words at the end of the tractate Sukka: "a day of celebration for the Righteous One", one for whom study is the primary activity and who practices a trade only secondarily[12]. One knows indeed the allusion[13] found in the verse: "He built for himself[14] a house" and the Targum Yonatan ben Uziel* specifies: "a house of study," while "for his flock[14] he made Sukkot*"[15]. Then, the good is subsequently revealed in the adjacent tractate, dealing with the festival, until there is fulfilled the promise that the Holy One, blessed be He, will make a Sukka* for the Righteous[16].
