Igrot Kodesh · Letter 9103

Volume 24 · Letter 73 · 7 Adar 5726 · To: lendemain du jour de la Hilloula de mon beau-père

By the grace of Hashem,

7 Adar 5726,
Brooklyn, New York,

To the distinguished and pleasant Chassid* who fears Hashem, chosen of his people, surpassing them, seeking the good of his people, of generous conduct, scion of an illustrious family, the Rav* Shneur Zalman[1], Shlita*,

I greet and bless you,

I have duly received your letter of the 20th of Shevat*, in reply to mine, which had been written on the day following the Hillula* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*[2]. In the meantime, you have surely received my subsequent letter, with what was enclosed therein. I have just received as well a letter from the chairman of the municipal committee[3] of Kfar Chabad*, Mr. Shlomo Maydantchik, concerning your meeting in your office and the content of your discussion. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your efforts, for the permanent and meticulous assistance you provide to all matters concerning Kfar Chabad* and, in particular, its development, not only in length and breadth, but also, I hope, in depth and height, especially according to the interpretation given to these dimensions at the beginning of the Shaar HaYichud*, of the Admur HaEmtzai*, the book that the masters of Chabad* define as "the index of Chassidut*."

May Hashem therefore bring it about that the words of our Sages[4] be fulfilled in you, according to which "when someone begins to perform a Mitzvah*, he is asked to complete it." Soon, you will indeed merit completing the project and taking full part in it. In particular, the residential buildings will be filled with new immigrants coming from there[5]. After a certain period, they will be permanently settled in our Holy Land, and then a second group will arrive, and yet a third, and more besides. Thus, "as in the days of your exodus from Egypt, I will show you wonders"[6], even at the present time, and "you will strip Egypt"[7], which means, according to the interpretation of our Sages[8], that "they emptied it like a grain store without grain." For "would you shorten the arm of Hashem?"[9], since "the salvation of Hashem comes in the blink of an eye"[10]. According to the formulation of Chassidut*, to the heartfelt wishes of every Jew as defined above, an essential element is added: all of this must take the form of a visible and tangible good, being filled with joy, as in the time of Purim*, which approaches, when "everything was overturned"[11] and "for the Jews there was light and joy"[12]. For "a verse cannot be stripped of its plain meaning"[13].

The superiority of the days of Purim* over those of Chanukah* is the joy that is both physical and moral[14]. And, to move from one idea to another while remaining in the same context, your brother's grandson has entered into the covenant of our father Avraham*[15] and this Mitzvah* is defined as one "which they pledged to perform with joy"[16]. He was named Chaim Vital*. According to the traditional formula, just as he has been brought into this covenant, may Hashem bring it about that he be likewise introduced to Torah*, the wedding canopy, and good deeds. You conclude your letter with an allusion to a journey to the land of the high mountains[17]. May Hashem therefore grant you success and may you sanctify His Name and that of Israel. Thereafter, you will return and "ascend" at a good and fruitful moment, in joy and enthusiasm. With my esteem, my respects, and my blessing that you give me good news, as well as for a joyous Purim*,

M. Schneerson,

P.S.: I read with interest what you say regarding the invitation of those who direct Chabad* activity in universities. Indeed, one of them is Professor Rosenblum, who visited the Holy Land — may it be restored and rebuilt — last summer and also met with you. In my view, the first person deserving an invitation, whom I know among others, is Professor Doctor Welvel Green, of Minneapolis, Minnesota. His name bears witness to him, since, of his own free will[18], he is called Welvel by all[19].
