Days of Chanukah* 5726,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Chaim*,[1]

I greet and bless you,

I have duly received your request for a blessing through Rav, the distinguished and agreeable Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Menachem Shmuel HaLevi Raichik*, emissary of the Sages.[2] It will be read at the grave of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*. I also received your check, whose amount was left blank so that I might set it myself. This month is the month of miracles, and these days are days of miracles, salvations, and wonders. It is therefore fitting that your first contribution to Tzedakah*, which is considered equivalent to all the Mitzvot*,[3] be three thousand Shekels — three thousand dollars.

Our Sages say[4] that it is preferable to perform a Mitzvah* oneself rather than to appoint an emissary. In this case, Tzedakah* should be given with joy and enthusiasm. I am therefore returning your check so that you may fill it in yourself, as I said, with joy and enthusiasm. You will then send it back to me.

To pass from one subject to another while remaining in the same context, I am enclosing a copy of a discourse concerning Tzedakah*[5] and the festivals of this month. May Hashem bring about the fulfillment of the conclusion of this discourse: "Please test Me in this matter"[6] and: "Tithe so that you may become wealthy."[7]

I extend my blessing for good health, as well as for success in your affairs, in accordance with your request for a blessing. For this, it is fitting to increasingly multiply your participation in Tzedakah*, advancing and adding, as these days of Chanukah* teach us, when we increase[8] day by day. With my blessing, to give me good tidings of all this,

על ידי הרב הוו"ח אי"א נו"מ עוסק בצ"צ וכו' מוה"ר מנחם שמואל דוד הלוי שי' רייטשיק שד"ר נתקבל הפ"נ שלו, שייקרא על ציון כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, ויחד עם זה נתקבלה ההמחאה (טשעק) שהסכום נשאר פנוי על מנת שאקבע גודל הסכום לפי דעתי.

והנה בהתאם לחודש זה הוא חודש הנסים, וימים אלו ימי הנסים והתשועות והנפלאות, יש לקבוע הסכום בתור נתינתו ראשונה לצדקה השקולה כנגד כל המצות לשלשת אלפים שקל (3,000$).

וכיון שאמרו חכמינו ז"ל מצוה בו יותר מבשלוחו, ונתינת הצדקה צריכה להיות דוקא מתוך שמחה וטוב לבב, מצורף בזה הטשעק על מנת שכ' ימלא אותו בכתיבת יד עצמו, וכאמור, מתוך שמחה וטוב לבב ואז יחזירנה.

ומענין לענין באותו ענין, מצורפת בזה העתקת שיחה בענין הצדקה וימי המועדים דחודש זה. ויהי רצון שיקויים בו כסיום שיחה האמורה ובחנוני נא בזאת גו' עשר בשביל שתתעשר.

בברכה לבריאות ולהצלחה בעניניו שבתוכן הפ"נ ובנקודתו להרבות בצדקה הלוך והוסיף וכהוראות ימי חנוכה אלו שמוסיפים מיום ליום ובברכה לבשורות טובות בכל האמור.
