To the young man…
I greet and bless you,
I am responding to your letter of 11 Kislev*, in which you request a blessing[1]. We have been given the assurance[2] that: 'if you make an effort, you will succeed.' You shall therefore study, with enthusiasm and ardor, the revealed part of the Torah* and Chassidus*, so that the Torah itself acknowledges that it is indeed a genuine effort. And this study will lead to action[3], to the observance of Mitzvot* in the best possible manner. Whereupon, the promise will be fulfilled and 'they will be crowned with success,' the heart and the brain, the intellect, will be more refined[4]. Nevertheless, the verse[5] specifies: 'I will drive them out little by little.' With my blessing that you give me good news of everything stated above,

You know the teaching of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*[6], according to which a person, just as he is obligated to know his faults, must, equally[7], be aware of his qualities — this is quite obvious.

כיון שהובטחנו יגעת ומצאת, הנה ילמוד בהתמדה ושקידה נגלה וחסידות ועד לאופן שהתורה קוראה לזה יגיעה והלימוד יביא לידי מעשה קיום המצות בהידור. ואז תקוים ההבטחה - ומצאת (גם בענין זיכוך הלב והמוח-שכלי, אלא שאמר הכתוב : מעט מעט אגרשנו גו').
