To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, the Rav Shneur Zalman[1] shlita*,

I greet and bless you,

In the spirit of the month of Kislev*[2], which we enter today and whose content, especially for Chassidim*, is the 19th of Kislev*, the 10th of Kislev*, and the days of Chanukah*, the common thread running through all these events is self-abnegation for the sake of spreading 'the candle which is a Mitzvah* and the Torah* which is a light'[3], the light and the oil that shone miraculously. And this common thread is as follows: 'Your springs shall spread outward,' so that 'you shall be extended,' advancing and illuminating without cease[4]. I therefore send you several publications of the youth of the Chabad* association, within the framework of their activities among student circles.

This activity has indeed been going on for some time already, but I waited until it had reached a development worthy of the name. At the present time, it has achieved success and borne fruit beyond all hope. I therefore wished to draw your attention to it, which will undoubtedly please you.

It is indeed very gratifying to see the rise of a broad field of activity and, above all, to observe with one's own eyes the fulfillment of the promise of the Admur HaZaken*, at the end of chapter 39 of the Tanya*, to the point where the Halacha*, concretely applicable, retains the principle in the Laws of Torah Study, chapter 4, at the end of paragraph 3. Indeed, 'none of us will be driven away'[5], in the most literal sense. This means that those who were truly repelled, in the full sense of the word, completely distant, are now drawing close under the influence of Chabad*, becoming very close, and are literally reliving their existence — their daily lives undergoing a change from one extreme to the other. With my respect, my esteem, and wishing you all good on the occasion of the days of liberation[6] and the approaching days of Chanukah*, for us and for all Israel, for the good,

ברוח דחודש כסלו שנכנסו בו היום, שתוכנו, ובפרט בשביל חסידים ואנ"ש שי', הוא הענין די"ט כסלו, יו"ד כסלו וימי החנוכה, שהצד השוה שבהם מסירות נפש להפצת נר מצוה ותורה אור - ואור השמן שהאיר באופן נסי, ונקודתם המשותפת הרי היא - ויפוצו מעינותיך חוצה באופן דופרצת מוסיף והולך מוסיף ואור -

הנני שולח לכ' מפירסומי צעירי אגודת חב"ד בשטח פעילותם בין חוגי הסטודנטים.

ואף שהעבודה האמורה נמשכת כבר מזמן, חכיתי עד שתגיע לשלב של התפתחות הראוי' לשמה. ועתה שהצליחה העבודה וגם עשתה פרי, ולמעלה מן המשוער, אמרתי להביאה לתשומת לב כ', שבודאי יגרום לו נחת רוח.

ואמנם יש בזה סיפוק גדול לראות התפתחות שדה פעולה נרחב, והעיקר שרואים גם בעיני בשר איך שמתאמתת הבטחת אדמו"ר הזקן (תניא ספל"ט) ועד כדי כך שהביאה הלכה למעשה בהל' ת"ת פ"ד סוס"ג, דבל ידח ממנו נידח כפשוטו ממש, זאת אומרת אפילו כאלו שהיו נידחים במלוא מובן המלה והיו רחוקים בתכלית הריחוק, מתקרבים (וכעת - בהשפעת חב"ד) קירוב הדוק ועד כדי תחי' ממש ושינוי מהקצה אל הקצה בחיי היום-יום.

בכבוד ובהוקרה ובאיחולי כל טוב לקראת ימי הגאולה וימי החנוכה הבאים עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה
