Igrot Kodesh · Letter 9042
Volume 24 · Letter 12 · To: tarif express.
By the grace of Hashem,
19 Mar Cheshvan* 5726,
Brooklyn,
I greet and bless you,
I reply to your letter of the eve of the holy Shabbat*, which reached me with delay.[1] Given its content, this reply is sent to you bypassing the queue and at express rate. You write to me about where your son should continue his studies.[2] Now, for someone like yourself, it is surely unnecessary to stress that there is no room for doubt insofar as the Torah legislates on this matter. In the present case there is a very clear Injunction,[3] namely: 'a man should always study what interests his heart.' Our Sages emphasize the importance of this directive to such a degree that the practical, applicable Halacha* is ruled accordingly in the Shulchan Aruch*, Yoreh De'ah*, laws of honoring parents, at the end of chapter 240. It applies even when the father expresses his disagreement and even if that disagreement endangers his life.[4] Despite all of this, he must study what interests his heart — and you should consult those texts.
It is equally self-evident that, since this is an instruction of our Torah — Torah of life — a definite good[5] flows from it, not only for the student but also for his parents. It is likewise clear that, since it is a matter of the interest of the heart, one cannot decree that the student — the son — must have a different interest. That is quite clear and can be verified in practice.
It is likewise quite evident, for the benefit of all concerned, that he must carry out all of the above in a pleasant manner, in closeness of hearts. In general, peace and drawing closer are important,[6] especially in a home such as yours, which is founded on Torah and its Mitzvot*. For 'its ways are ways of pleasantness and all its paths are peace.'[7] In this regard, more is expected of the parents than of the son, for they are older, have more experience on the paths of life and in relations within the home.
Obviously I do not wish to alarm you, Heaven forbid. I must, however, emphasize once more that at all times — and especially in our era — it has been necessary to preserve, to the greatest possible extent, the emotional state of the younger generation, of young men and young women. For one must observe what is happening, unfortunately, among young people: what their general state of health is, and their emotional state in particular. For that reason, in this matter the sooner the better. I emphasize once more that this concerns the benefit of every individual and of all the parties involved. You and your wife must encourage your son to go to the place that interests his heart — and you should do so as quickly as possible.
Of course, I read with all due attention what you wrote regarding setting a goal, establishing oneself in life, the chances of changing one's conduct. Nevertheless, as I said, all of that does not truly depend on rational reasoning, but rather, as our Sages say, on the interest of the heart.[5] To this is added, in the present case, the emotional tension and the relations that are deteriorating more and more.
You conclude your letter by saying that, in your view, a third party has interfered. You will excuse me for pointing out that, even if I do not know what the initial cause[5] of all this was, I did, however, speak on numerous occasions with your son. The current situation[5] is therefore exactly as described above, which means that the halachic ruling — the directive of our Torah, Torah of life — must be fully applied. For at present your son will not be able to change the desire of his heart, even if he sincerely wished to. In writing this I am thinking of at least a year or two. With my blessing that you give me good news of all this, and with my regards,
