I greet and bless you,
I reply to your letter of Rosh Chodesh* Cheshvan, in which you write to me about a match for your son — a distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, with good conduct and many accomplishments — and you raise the question of the beard.[1] In my view, if this young woman is satisfied by your son's qualities with respect to Torah*, Mitzvot*, and fear of Hashem, yet withholds her agreement solely because he wears a beard, this proves that Torah and Mitzvot matter little to her. For her fear of what her friends will say would contradict all those qualities! If such is this young woman's situation with regard to fear of Hashem, our Torah — Torah of life — the observance of its Mitzvot, of which it is said:[2] 'He shall live by them,' one must genuinely ask whether this is a good match — that is self-evident.
May Hashem, Who bestows His Providence on each individual, grant that you find, very soon, a match that is truly suitable for your son, from whom you will derive great genuine satisfaction — that is, Jewish and Chassidic* satisfaction. This will be added to the satisfaction you already derive from his current conduct and everything concerning him. With my blessing that you give me good news of all this,

במענה למכתבו מר"ח חשון, בו כותב אודות שידוך עבור בנו הוו"ח אי"א בעל מדות רב פעלים...ונוגע בשאלת הזקן.
לדעתי, באם תהי' המדוברת שבעת רצון ממעלות בנו שי' בתורה ומצות ויראת שמים וכו' ובכל זה תעכב הסכמתה על השידוך מפני גידול הזקן, הרי זה הוכחה שעניני התורה והמצוה אין חשובים בעיני', כיון שהחשש מה תאמרנה החבירות שלה וכו' מכריע מעלות האמורות,
ואם כן הוא מצב המדוברת ביראת שמים תורתנו תורת חיים ובקיום מצותי' עליהם נאמר וחי בהם, אזי צריך עיון גדול אם זהו שידוך מתאים, וק"ל.
ויהי רצון מהשם יתברך המשגיח על כל אחד בהשגחה פרטית שבקרוב ממש ימצא שידוך המתאים באמת לבנו שי' ויראה ממנו רוב נחת אמיתי, הוא נחת יהודי חסידותי, נוסף על הנחת שגם עתה מקבל מהנהגתו ועניניו.
