Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8996 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 23 · Letter 325
By the grace of Hashem, eve of the
holy Shabbos* Parshas* Shelach* 5725,
Brooklyn, New York,
I greet you and bless you,
I have received your letter (note 1: This letter was addressed to several people. See Likkutei Sichos*, volume 8, page 296, as well as the talk of Sunday of Parshas Shelach, in Likkutei Sichos*, volume 8, from page 289.). One point is timely, concerning the Parshah* of this week, dealing with the scouts who "at that time (note 2: According to the commentary of Rashi*, at this reference, and the Midrash* Bamidbar* Rabba*.) were virtuous." It is for this reason that they were chosen and sent (note 3: The Midrash Bamidbar Rabba, chapter 16, paragraph 5, states that they were chosen by the Holy One, blessed be He, and by Moshe. Indeed, the latter refused to send them before having solicited the opinion of Hashem for each of them in particular. And, Hashem confirmed to him that they were all fit to assume this mission.) by Moshe*, the shepherd of Yisrael* (note 4: He knew the spirit of each one, as our Sages emphasize, commenting on the verse Pinchas 27:16. See also the Likkutei Torah*, Shir HaShirim*, page 35b.). Then, subsequently, "they went up and scouted." What happened then is known, as the Parshah* relates at length.
According to the commentary of the Alter Rebbe*, particularly in the Likkutei Torah*, one can establish that the argument of the scouts was then as follows. Why should the Children of Yisrael* enter the Holy Land, where the service of Hashem resides essentially in concrete Mitzvos*, where one must, above all, concern oneself with what is earthly — plow, plant, harvest, gather grapes or collect olives? For, if a man plows at the time of plowing, if he gathers at the time of harvest, what will become (note 5: Who will devote himself to its study? See tractate Berachos* 35b.) of the Torah*? In the desert, in contrast, one received one's bread and water. Everyone could then be faithful (note 6: See the Midrash Shemos Rabba, chapter 25, paragraph 5, which says: "it is the manna, it is the well.") to the study of the Torah*, making it their sole occupation. Moreover, one would learn it from Moshe*, our master, who received it (note 7: See the Zohar*, volume 3, page 82b.) on Mount Sinai* and who taught it to each person (note 8: Tractate Eruvin* 54b.).
Now, it is indeed stated that, "at that time, they were virtuous," which allows one to establish that they wished to fulfill the will of Hashem, to scout "the land of Canaan that I give to the Children of Yisrael*" in order to enter it, in any event. Then, what change took place when "they went up and scouted"? Why did they change their mind and slander the land?
The answer to this question can be found in the statement of our Sages* (note 9: See the Mechilta* on the verse Yisro* 19:9.) according to which "what one hears cannot be compared to what one sees." When they arrived in the land and they saw, as it is stated: "all the people that we saw... there we saw the giants... behold its fruit," they declared, to themselves and to those who had sent them: "We will not be able to go up against this people, for it is stronger than us." Indeed, it would then be impossible to maintain the current level and, all the more so, to know elevation, from one stage to the next. On the contrary, "this land devours its inhabitants," even when they wish to settle there and make it an inhabitable land, to plow and to plant while putting into practice the principles: "all your actions shall be for the Name of Hashem" and, moreover, "in all your ways, know Him" (note 10: See the Rambam*, Laws of Opinions, at the end of chapter 3, unlike the order adopted by the Tur* and Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 231. But, this point will not be developed here.), that is to say to fulfill the Mitzvos*, in a concrete manner.
From all this, a teaching for the service of Hashem emerges. A person must not be discouraged when he is confronted with concrete action and, because of this, faces difficulties, veils, concealments that he did not foresee from the outset or that he did not imagine to be so strong and intense, to the point of having to conquer them and elevate them. Indeed, such situations have already been encountered in the past and it is precisely our Parshah* that reports such a trial and specifies its remedy — a firm resolution according to which: "you shall not rebel against Hashem," in which case, "you shall not fear... Hashem is with us."
It may sometimes seem that the trial and the veils are too strong. Thus, in this case, virtuous men, chosen by Moshe Rabbeinu* from among all of Yisrael*, wished to faithfully assume the mission he entrusted to them. Yet,
A) they had, beforehand, already heard about this land and they had indeed made a good decision, then what they saw caused them to change their mind and they experienced a fear that, in their estimation, was justified.
B) they made an error in doing so, for, had they not rebelled against Hashem, they would not have been afraid and they would not have been led to modify their decision.
How much more so is this the case in our era of Ikvesa DiMeshicha* (the footsteps of Moshiach*). The rationality of natural events leads one to observe the difficulty, the veils, the "giants," what is "powerful," "stronger than us," but there is absolutely no reason to be affected by all this. On the contrary, our eternal Torah* gives us the assurance that, if "you do not rebel against Hashem," then, "you shall fear nothing, ascend we shall ascend and prevail we shall prevail, we shall inherit it" (note 11: The expression "ascend we shall ascend" alludes to the "will of the heart" transcending reason. The phrase "prevail we shall prevail," in contrast, has a more general scope and "we shall inherit it" introduces the details, as shown by the lengthy analysis established by the Chassidic* discourse entitled "And Calev silenced" of 5674.). It is therefore certain that each person will make an inner and firm decision, that of not rebelling against Hashem, will strengthen it and put it into practice (note 12: See the Rambam*, Laws of Divorce, at the end of chapter 2.). Thereupon, in a concrete manner, "you shall fear nothing, ascend we shall ascend and we shall inherit it" (note 13: This refers to the inheritance emanating from the positive aspect of the sparks of holiness of Tohu* that fell during the shattering of the vessels, according to an explanation found in the Chassidic discourse entitled "If the spirit" of 5695, published in the Sefer HaMaamarim* Kuntresim*. See the lengthy development found in that text.).
It is certain that each person has made a firm decision not to rebel against Hashem. By arousing it and revealing it, one can indeed proclaim: "You shall not fear. Ascend, we shall ascend and we shall inherit it." With my blessing,
M. Schneerson,

You write to me that the scouts had, in this matter, a personal interest. Such an explanation is indeed found in the Likkutei Torah*, page 37b, which says: "They did not want to lower themselves," as well as on page 41b. Regarding the meaning of the expression: "He hunted with his mouth" (note 14: Toldos* 25:28.), consult the Torah Or*, page 20c.
