Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8987 — Grief & Loss
Volume 23 · Letter 316
By the grace of Hashem, eve of the holy
Shabbos*, eve of the festival of Shavuos*,
time of the giving of our Torah* 5725,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the attention of the participants at the conclusion of the study
of Igeres HaKodesh*, of the Admur HaZakein*, author of the
Tanya* and Decisor of the hidden part of the Torah*,
author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed
part of the Torah*, may Hashem grant you long life,
I greet you and bless you,
I learned, with pleasure, that you are concluding the study of the Igeres HaKodesh* section of the Tanya*, of the Admur HaZakein* (note 1: See Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 24, p. 406.). Although this text was appended to the Tanya* after the passing of the Admur HaZakein*, the decision to do so was made by: "the sons of the author, of holy memory, may his soul rest in Gan Eden*" (note 2: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to the approbation of the Tanya*, which one should consult.") and the first signatory was his son, the Admur HaEmtzai*, who succeeded him, which means that he filled (note 3: The Rebbe* underlines the words: "filled" and "full.") his place, so that, from the outset, it was entirely full (note 3). Now, the content of the conclusion of Igeres HaKodesh*, of its chapter 32, is the value of the Tzedakah* that is given by a person of his own initiative, thanks to the love of Hashem awakened by the reading of the Shema Yisrael*, with the purpose of attaching oneself to Him and making the gift of one's own person by proclaiming His Unity, "with all your might," in the most literal sense (note 4: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to the end of chapter 32 of Igeres HaKodesh*. The conclusion reprises a letter from the previous year. See Igeres HaKodesh*, chapter 17.").
In this case, the end is linked to the beginning, that is, to chapter 1 of Igeres HaKodesh*, which also speaks of the fervor of prayer, emanating from the depth of the heart, by making the gift of one's own person (note 5: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "According to Igeres HaKodesh*, chapter 1."). Nevertheless, the introduction speaks of the primary effect of prayer, which has moral effects, strengthens and sharpens the intellect of the one who meditates upon the greatness of Hashem, blessed be He, as well as his emotions, his love and his fear of Hashem. Then, the material elements intervene, the Tzedakah* that is given, in a concrete manner, in this physical world, in accordance with the halachic* decision of the Shulchan Aruch* (note 6: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Orach Chaim*, chapters 155 and 156."), fixing the order of the day for each person. Thus, from the synagogue, where one prays, one goes to the house of study, the place of Torah*, then one devotes oneself to one's affairs. When one engages in commercial activity, for example, one must be, through it, a Sanctuary for Hashem by giving Tzedakah* from what one has earned by one's own effort. And, this Tzedakah* will bring elevation to the entirety of one's earnings, as the Admur HaZakein* explains (note 7: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "In the Tanya*, at the end of chapter 34.").
One can find an allusion to this organization of the day in the explanation our Sages* give (note 8: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "At the conclusion of Tractate* Moed Katan*.") of the verse: "They shall advance from strength to strength and one shall see Hashem in Tzion*." This explanation is retained by the Admur HaZakein* in the Halachah*, concretely applicable, in these terms (note 9: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "In the Shulchan Aruch* of the Admur HaZakein*, Orach Chaim*, at the beginning of chapter 155."): "Whoever goes from the synagogue to the house of study in order to study there has the merit of welcoming the Presence of Hashem." And, the means, the vessel enabling one to welcome the Presence of Hashem is clearly defined by the verse: "I shall see Your Face through righteousness" (note 10: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See Igeres HaKodesh*, chapter 8, as well as the introduction of the Admur HaZakein* to his Siddur*."). Indeed, Igeres HaKodesh* concludes here with the words: "His righteousness shall walk before him," which means that one will reveal the Face of Hashem, even in this material world.
When one adopts this organization, one knows no rest, no interruption for, each day, during the time of mercy, the propitious moment that constitutes prayer, one pours out one's soul like water before Hashem, through the fervor of one's prayer, as was said, from the very depth of the heart, by making the gift of one's own person (note 11: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Igeres HaKodesh*, chapter 1."), like a field (note 12: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the beginning of Tractate* Moed Katan* and Rashi's* commentary, at this reference.") that is found on a mountain, "the mountain where Hashem shall provide" (note 13: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "This expression designates the Temple, according to Tractate* Berachos* 62b, which is 'My house, a house of prayer.'") and that must therefore be watered constantly. For this reason, our Sages* say that, throughout the six days, the six millennia that the world comprises (note 14: According to Tractate* Rosh Hashanah* 31a.), one must water it, until arriving at the seventh day, at the "day that shall be entirely Shabbos* and rest for eternity."
I extend to you my respects and my blessing according to the traditional formulation (note 15: Pronounced at the conclusion of a study.): just as you have completed the study of this text, may you begin and complete other tractates and other books, may you study and teach, guard, do and accomplish. With my blessing, expressed in the words of our master, my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, to receive the Torah* with joy and in a profound manner,
