Volume 23 · Letter 303

By the grace of Hashem,

5 Iyar* 5725,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letters, in which you mention your engagement (note 1: See Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 17, p. 499.) and you tell me that you have considered touching your beard (note 2: Trimming it to facilitate the engagement. See, on this subject, letters no. 8297 and 9001.). It is quite obvious that a union must be based on good will and on a firm determination to assist one another, in all domains, all the more so concerning Judaism, the Torah* and its Mitzvos*, which are the foundation of happiness, for a Jewish man and a Jewish woman, in this world as in the World to Come. Of course, concerning the good and holiness, there exist several levels, one above the other, in the words of our Sages* (note 3: See Tractate* Shabbos* 21b.), a Mitzvah*, a better way of fulfilling the Mitzvah*, the best way. And, those who, for whatever reason, place themselves only at the level of the Mitzvah*, also know that the better way is, in its simple sense, an addition, an improvement, a more beautiful practice, even if, for a certain reason, they do not put it into practice.

Obviously, the channel and the vessel for the children of Israel to receive the blessing of Hashem in all their needs is a daily conduct in conformity with the Torah* and all that pertains to it. Consequently, when one solicits a specific blessing from the One Who gives the Torah* and Who commands the Mitzvah*, one must strengthen this conduct, in the best way. You will deduce from this, including according to the opinion of those who present the fact of not touching the beard as a means of better fulfilling the Mitzvah* (note 4: But not an absolute obligation.), that one must guard oneself from such a manner of acting when one solicits a specific blessing from the One Who gives the Torah* and Who commands the Mitzvah*, all the more so when one is laying the foundations of an eternal edifice, of a marriage. Of course, other Decisors consider that not touching the beard is indeed an Injunction of our Torah* and, when one has adopted their opinion for many years, one must not even consider changing one's attitude in an ordinary moment and, even less so, in a period such as this (note 5: When the blessing of Hashem is necessary.).

As I said, when one of the two (note 6: The young man and the young woman wishing to become engaged.) has been educated according to the opinion that does not see in this practice a means of better fulfilling the Mitzvah*, his primary obligation is to strengthen the other, in this domain, so that he adopts a positive attitude toward Jewish practice, including when it is a matter of better fulfilling the Mitzvah*. How much more must this be so when the other has himself practiced in this way for several years and, moreover, if, for him, it is not a means of better fulfilling the Mitzvah*, but indeed an Injunction, the Mitzvah* itself. And, what has just been set forth regarding the beard applies, in the same way, to many other Mitzvos* of the Torah*, including those of daily application. Consequently, before sealing a union, one must be absolutely certain of the position one adopts, in this matter: must one renounce one's own opinion when the other sees, in a certain practice, only a means of better fulfilling the Torah*? Moreover, life demands that a renunciation not be consented only because one cannot do otherwise, that one is forced to go through with it, that one feels bitterness and rebels. On the contrary, one must renounce of one's own free will, willingly, with joy and enthusiasm. And, as I said, this does not concern only the matter of touching the beard, but, in an identical manner, all the other Mitzvos* of the Torah* and the best way of putting them into practice. For, such problems can arise frequently and the solution must result from a consensus, adopted with joy and enthusiasm, which is essential, in this matter.

You will be able to deduce from all that has just been said my answer to your question. You must evaluate your own situation with particular attention: are you truly ready for such a concession, when, as you yourself write, you are always heading in the same direction, concentrating particularly on the most scrupulous and best practice of the Mitzvos*? It is based on this evaluation that you will decide what should be done. I will specify, furthermore, another point, although this one is equally obvious. The question you pose relates to your marriage, but, in reality, it is relevant at all times and in all places, for the Torah* is eternal and its Mitzvos* are immutable. Furthermore, every Jewish man and every Jewish woman has received the Injunction to know elevation in the domain of holiness, not to descend. In the words of our Sages* (note 7: In Tractate* Berachos* 28a.): "we have received the Injunction to elevate ourselves in the domain of holiness." May Hashem therefore, Who accords His Providence to each man and each woman, guide you, in all this, toward what will be good for you, with a true good. With my blessing to give me good tidings of this,

For the Rebbe* Shlita*,

the secretary,
