Volume 23 · Letter 286

By the grace of Hashem,

11 (note 1: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Regarding its significance, in the domain of holiness, one should consult the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Massei, p. 98c.") Adar Sheini* 5725,

Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

We find ourselves (note 2: This letter was addressed to several people. See Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 6, p. 373.) a few days (note 3: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "When they are joyous, one considers that they are but a few days, according to the explanation of the Lekach Tov* on the verse Shemos* 2:23. One should consult the Likkutei Torah*, Shir HaShirim*, p. 5d, which says: 'Day one: the day which is the revelation of the level of unity.'") from Purim*, which approaches and, moreover, our Sages* say, in the Mishnah* (note 4: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Beginning of Tractate* Megillah*. See the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Bechukosai, p. 48d."), which is stated in the present tense (note 5: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Tur* and Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, end of chapter 688 and the Likkutei Torah*, Shemini Atzeres*, p. 86a."): "The Megillah* is read on the 11th... the 15th" (note 6: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Eleven is the numerical value of the letters Vav and Hei of the Tetragrammaton, while fifteen is the numerical value of the Yud and the Hei. Amalek* wished to separate them, according to the Shnei Luchos HaBris*, Parshas* Tetzaveh, p. 329a. Now, Haman was one of his descendants, according to the Targum Sheini* on Megillas Esther* and Tractate* Sofrim*, chapter 13. See the end of the Chassidic* discourse entitled: 'The Megillah* is read,' of 5629 and the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Berachah, p. 97b."). May Hashem therefore grant that each man and each woman, within all of Israel, read and draw down (note 7: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Tanya*, at the end of chapter 37 and the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Vayikra, p. 5b.") the Megillah* (note 8: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "The women also participated in the miracle, according to Tractate* Megillah* 4a. In fact, Esther* asked and obtained that her name be inscribed for all generations, as Tractate* Megillah* 7a emphasizes, while the days of Purim* were instituted by both Mordechai* and Esther*, as the Yerushalmi* states. And, the Bavli* says: 'Esther* asked to be established for all generations,' as Rashi* explains. This point will not be developed here. See also the Likkutei Torah*, at the end of Parshas* Berachah."), with all that it entails, all that relates to Purim*. Moreover, this name is in the plural, although it was given because of the casting of lots, Pur. The Tzemach Tzedek* explains (note 9: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "In the Chassidic* discourse entitled: 'Only by lot,' which appears in manuscript Bamidbar no. 16 and which is included in the discourse, of the same title, of 5626. See the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Vayikra, p. 2d, which says: 'Draw me... we shall run.'") The discourse: 'Only by lot' is also found in the Or HaTorah*, Parshas* Pinchas, p. 1063.), on this subject, that there are two Pur, the casting of lots by Haman, that of the forces of evil, on the one hand, that of holiness, on the other, as it is said: "Our lot is pleasant" (note 10: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See Igeres HaKodesh*, chapter 7, the first making reference to the end of the verse: 'You sustain my lot.' The Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Beshalach, p. 1b, says: 'It is pleasant.'"). The latter transcends all rationality, just as the expression "very good" alludes to the evil inclination transformed into good.

Perhaps it is possible to add a clarification on this subject. This word is stated in the language of Haman, since it says Purim* and not Goralos*, in Hebrew. Various texts of Chassidus* explain that the divine soul, through the effort it exerts upon the animal soul and the physical body, itself receives increased strength, just as the Tzaddik* obtains elevation by attaining Teshuvah*. Thus, the elevation of the World to Come resides essentially in the possibility for the Tzaddik* to attain Teshuvah* and not in the transformation into a Tzaddik* of one who has attained Teshuvah*. One can also establish that this is so by recalling that the soul, before descending here below, is at this level of the Tzaddik*. There, "it stands with the King, in His work," as our Sages* explain, regarding the teaching (note 11: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "Midrash* Rus Rabbah*, at the beginning of chapter 2. See the Likkutei Torah*, at the beginning of Parshas* Teitzei."): "With whom did He take counsel? With the souls of the Righteous." The descent must therefore result in an elevation, still in this material world, while being in a physical body, in order to transform darkness into light (note 12: The Rebbe* notes, at the bottom of the page: "See the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Bamidbar, from p. 2a and at the beginning of the discourse entitled: 'How beautiful are your tents,' which says: 'One finds, on this subject, several explanations. The most correct is the following...'") and to demonstrate the full importance of Teshuvah*.

שלום וברכה!
