By the grace of Hashem, eve of the holy

Shabbos* Parshas* Ki Sisa* 5725,

Brooklyn, New York,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received your letter (note 1: This letter was addressed to several people. See Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 6, p. 395.). It is said, in the Parshah* of this week:

"And, Hashem spoke to Moshe*," after he had asked Him (note 2: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate* Bava Basra* 10b.") in these terms: "Master of the world, how shall the lot of Yisrael* be elevated?" Indeed, the sin of the golden calf had just been committed (note 3: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Midrash* Tanchuma*, beginning of Parshas* Tisa*, and Rashi's* commentary on the verse Tisa* 30:16."). The Holy One, blessed be He, then answered Moshe*:

"in these terms," for all the generations (note 4: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "As our Sages* indicate, in Tractate* Bava Basra*."), including "the day that I shall recall," for then, "I shall remember against them their sin," of the golden calf (note 5: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tractate* Sanhedrin* 120a."):

"When you shall elevate": this directive is addressed precisely to "you" (note 6: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Which is not the case for the other censuses, as the Maharsha* notes, on Tractate* Bava Basra* 10b."), that is to say to the head of Yisrael* (note 7: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See the lengthy explanation appearing in the commentary on the Chassidic* discourse entitled: 'The Heavens are My Throne,' chapter 3, which is printed in the Likkutei Torah* on three Parshiyos*," and the Or HaTorah* Bereishis*, vol. 3, from p. 473b.), for only Moshe* had in no way been involved in the sin of the golden calf, since he was then on the mountain, in the company of Hashem.

"You shall elevate the head" and, thus, you will be able to "cause their head to receive this elevation" (note 8: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Rashi's* commentary on Tractate* Bava Basra* 10b."), once their head is high. You will therefore be able to count them (note 9: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "For a verse or an idea 'cannot be divested of its plain meaning.'") and, in this manner, highlight the love that Hashem bears them (note 10: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See Rashi's* commentary at the beginning of Parshas* Mattos*. Moreover, the census, in this case, brings about elevation and, therefore, it is clear that none can disappear, as Tractate* Beitzah* 3b indicates. This allows one to answer the question posed by this same passage of Tractate* Bava Basra*, regarding the fact that the elevation is achieved through Tzedakah*. Indeed, if this is so, why establish the count of the children of Yisrael*? And this question is all the stronger because one can also ask in what manner this count elevates the lot. For, quite the contrary, it is forbidden to count Jews, as the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe* states, Orach Chaim*, chapter 156, paragraph 15, which cites as a reference, in the margin: 'Ramah,' but perhaps one should read: 'Shmuel 1.' One must conclude that the counting of the Jews possesses, in itself, an intrinsic elevation, as is shown here."), obtain the atonement of the sin that prevents (note 11: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "This justifies the astonishment of Moshe*: 'How shall the lot of Yisrael* be elevated?' One will also see the Midrash* Shemos Rabbah*, at the beginning of Parshas* Tisa*: 'When you shall elevate: The children of Yisrael* are indebted to Me.' And, the Tzemach Tzedek*, in his Derech Mitzvosecha*, vol. 2, p. 289a, explains this statement based on the Yerushalmi*, Tractate* Shekalim*, chapter 2, paragraph 3, which specifies: 'indebted on account of sins, as it is said: Your sins were placed upon my head.'" The explanation of the Derech Mitzvosecha* also appears in the Or HaTorah*, Parshas* Tisa*, p. 1854.) their lot from being elevated, especially after the sin of the golden calf had been committed. Then,

"Each man shall give the ransom of his soul" (note 12: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See the commentary of Rabbeinu Gershom Meor HaGolah* on Tractate* Bava Basra* 10b."), that is to say Tzedakah*, as it is said (note 13: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Tzemach Tzedek*, at the reference previously cited."): "Redeem your sin through Tzedakah*."

* * *

In fact, every soul of the house of Yisrael* carries within it a part of Moshe* our master (note 14: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tanya*, beginning of chapter 42. See the Tikkunei Zohar*, Tikkun* 69, p. 114a, which says: 'There is an equivalent of Moshe*, our master, in every generation, for the six hundred thousand Jewish souls.'") and our Parshah* thus delivers the following teaching. Thanks to this part, each person can elevate his lot by highlighting the love that Hashem feels for him. For this, it is fitting to meditate on the fact that "You have loved us with an everlasting love, Hashem our Elokim*. You have chosen us" in our physical body "and You have drawn us close."

Therefore, just as "the face is reflected in water" (note 15: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tanya*, end of chapter 49."), man will also be led (note 16: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tanya*, introduction of the Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah*, which says: 'Moshe*, our master, wished to implant this love in the heart of every Jew.' One will consult this text.") to attach himself to Hashem, to reveal His Light here below (note 17: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tanya*, at the end of chapter 49."), to elevate the entire world toward Him, through the Torah*, the Mitzvos*, and in particular, Tzedakah*, which is the essential aspect of the practically applicable Mitzvos* and which surpasses them all (note 18: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "Tanya*, chapter 37, pp. 48b and 49a."). It is in this way that one puts into practice the directive to build for Hashem a Sanctuary and a Dwelling Place here below, among the lower creatures. With my blessing of success in your sacred mission,

M. Schneerson,

You write to me (note 19: This paragraph was added to the letter addressed to Rav* Yitzchak Dubov. See, regarding him, letter no. 8709.) about the collection boxes of the Kollel* (note 20: The Kollel* Chabad*.). I am surprised by this question after each (note 21: The Rebbe* underlines the word: "each.") of our masters and leaders has called for eagerness. Happy, therefore, is one who makes efforts in this domain, who acts and who causes others to act. The commentary of Rashi*, at the beginning of Parshas* Vaeira* (note 22: See, regarding this, Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 3, p. 860.) says: "I revealed Myself to the Patriarchs," precisely because they are Patriarchs and not because Avraham* received guests.
