Igrot Kodesh · Letter 8951 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 23 · Letter 278
By the grace of Hashem,
17 Adar Rishon* 5725,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I read, with much surprise, your letter from the eve of Shabbos* Tetzaveh*, in which you speak to me about your dear grandson, a young man who has the fear of Hashem and who is a Torah* scholar. You tell me that you derive no satisfaction from him, which should not happen, nor from his physical health.
Immediately, I inquired, I asked questions about what your grandson was doing, and I was informed, once again, of his success in the study of the Torah*, a study that, of course, leads to action (note 1: According to Tractate* Kiddushin* 40b.). As for his health, the doctor found that everything was well. It only seems that, by nature, he is always exacting about his moral situation, which has an effect on his health. It is clear that travel, moving from one place to another, will change nothing of all this, and may Hashem grant that it cause him no harm. Our Sages* teach (note 2: According to Tractate* Avodah Zarah* 19a.), indeed, that one must opt for a study that arouses interest, and who knows how he will adjust to this new place?
You indicate, later in your letter, that he will also learn a trade, in this new place, for: "Torah* is good when it is accompanied by the ways of the world" (note 3: According to Tractate* Avos*, chapter 2, Mishnah* 2.). Now, this very text mentions the Torah* before the ways of the world, and it is absolutely certain that the time has not yet come for your grandson to take away the hours he devotes to his enthusiasm and ardor for the study of our Torah*, Torah* of life, giving life in the most literal sense within this physical world, and to be troubled by the numerous reasonings, the thoughts of the sons of man and their stratagems, contrary to: "Hashem made man upright."
I know that the atmosphere of this country leads one to think about one's future from the youngest age of sons and daughters. Nevertheless, whoever honestly observes what happens around him will see, at every step, will note that, very often, one does not earn one's living by the trade one learned in one's youth. I am sending a copy of my letter also to your son, the Rav*, for I do not know who is behind the hypotheses formulated in your letter, although these seem to contradict the manner of acting of your son, the Rav*, who indeed goes against the current of the practice of the United States, since he acts with eagerness, without taking into account the opinion of the majority. You therefore derive pleasure, true pleasure, from your grandson, and may Hashem grant that you have as much, or even more, from your other descendants. And, may Hashem add abundantly to all this, thanks to the considerable success that your grandson will know in the study of the revealed dimension of the Torah* and of Chassidus*, without being disturbed by external elements. Without a doubt, when he will be able to study calmly, there will be fulfilled in him the terms of the promise (note 4: In Tractate* Avos*, chapter 6, Mishnah* 4.) according to which: "you shall be happy in this world and it shall be good for you..." (note 5: In the World to Come.). With my respects and my blessing to give me good tidings,
N.B.: Everything is an effect of Divine Providence*. I therefore have the obligation and the merit to point out to you the necessity of fixing a time for the study of the profound dimension of the Torah*, which, in our era, has been revealed through Chassidus*. This study will be daily and increased during Shabbos*, as explained by the writings of the Arizal*, who is alive.
